I do love many of the “YouTuber’s” that made their way by doing a decent+ Job @ recording themselves show some actually valuable instruction on some skill, process, or approach to stuff. I learned a lot of woodworking (both @ and WAYYY above my level). And I guarantee that the guy that started those video’s is now making a noticeable amount of add-royalties on the side.

lol - totally went down a rabbit hole to research how much you make on YouTube via reddit. Seems like there are some very mixed experiences. According to what some of the people were saying, for example A) 100,000 views in 2 days was yielding people between $150 and $300. And B) some sites mention YouTube pays ~$7 per 1000 views (depends on location of viewer, length of time, and some other metrics). And on reddit some people were talking about using advertising like facebook or Adsense to increase revenue higher.

Kinda glad i clicked on this post. It did lead to some interesting examples and info. I’ve always thought it would be fun to make a how to video on some of my cooking, gardening, or wood working projects! Maybe this would be a good carrot to motivate me to bust out the camera & mic, and put at least a 1/3rd effort into video production!

I've thought about it.
From what I've heard it takes a long time and a lot of views to start generating income.
If I were to make informative videos on how to do something or about something that I enjoy, then it would probably just be something that I do for myself without a goal of making money from it.

From the videos I saw regarding this...everyone seems to say you need a massive backlog of videos to make real money. Once you get a following, more and more people will start watching since your name will get out there. Those people will watch previous videos which will generate a lot more overall views, etc etc.

This is why we end up with more and more disturbing videos out there or completely misleading titles or description of what the video is about. We have all seen people doing risky or crazy things hoping this video gets a big enough following to make enough not get a real job.

It is all about views and I think the video might need you to finish whole video.
So many say " wait till the end" or "surprise ending" to get people to stay with a nothing video long enough to count. I am seeing more and more companies or perhaps fading celebrities doing these so it must make enough if you get the views to be worth it.

Agreed. And I’d like to believe the idea that, “if you truly enjoy the process & act of making an instructional video (or just observational video) of something you know/care about. That if you keep @ it, you’ll get good/better.

And if you happen to keep documenting your progress. And put the time into these projects (@ decent frequency).

That video and/or content of film, will get good and better.” And I think people just naturally gravitate towards craftsmanship, sound instruction, and honesty/trustworthiness. As long as you seem genuine. It would be up to the individual to monetize that or not. I do think people are starting to want to support the content creators they follow or admire. I know I have started to.

*Edit add - That being said. It would be a fun form of gratitude if you happen to earn a little bit for your time creating everything and the process of sharing it w/ everyone. (Big difference in recognition/gratitude from viewers if you just snapped uncut video on your phone VS. put in any level of production value (much much more time consuming though).

Also, if you start a youtube channel with the intention of making money...chances are its not going to work out. Look at the channels/videos that have massive followings. I would bet almost anything that they started out as a hobby, or some sort of fun project. Isnt there this young kid who does nothing but open packages of disney related things...they make like $10+ million a year. Theres no way they started out thinking they would make money off that.

My wife was just in NYC at Macy's...a "youtube star" was there. All she does is makeup videos. 10's of millions of followers. She was signing stuff and had detailed security all around her. Its hard to predict what will make you money on youtube.
