What do most people think about changing careers? Is it worth going back to school to change careers? Is it worth paying for another degree?

If it makes you happy, it's worth it.

My other half had a job offer recently that would have allowed me the time and resources to rethink my own career. I can't say I didn't do a bit of dreaming, but, the offer was going to require too much change all at once so he ended up turning it down. I'm not in love with what I do and I feel that one's early 30's are a bit of a crucible to figure all this stuff out.

I'm inspired by a couple of examples. Back when I thought I wanted to be a firefighter, and I did/ still do, I had a couple of years as a volunteer under my belt and was fully certified, just not paid. One of many mentors was an "early" career firefighter at 39 years old. When he was 37, he was ready to give up corporate life working in an IT department and he and his family made changes so he could go from making 120k/year to about 53k/year as an entry level FF. He was in decent shape already but he really upped his fitness and began testing for departments and was hired shortly thereafter. He said it was the best thing he ever did. Of course, slightly awkward being the most inexperienced and oldest crew member, but he carried a passion and eagerness that got him through.

My other half also tried out a new dentist in town since we moved. I haven't met the guy, so this is all second-hand, but he sounds cool. He's maybe in his early 50's and his story was that he was a construction project manager of sorts and decided that he hated it in his mid 30's. So, he went back to school to become a dentist, graduated, and started a small practice with his wife in his late 30's /early 40's. According to my husband, he was also saying it's the best thing he ever did.

Someone I graduated high school with has also changed course recently (well, 3 years ago). He's a 3rd year student in dentistry as well, came from teaching middle school science.

I'm in my early 30's and there's a fire under my ass already, I just don't know which direction to jump!

Good luck to you and your quest.
    History will judge the complicit.

The focus should be on internal happiness and doing something you like doing.

Most people choose a degree based on ability, but a career should be based more on aptitudes and styles of work.
