  • Carry on luggage fees

Has anyone every traveled with Spirit Airlines? Or paid for overhead luggage? How do they know that you have overhead carry on luggage and paid or need to pay? I've never and I buy the cheapest. I'm reading that now the economy plus seats you aren't supposed to have wheelie luggage. I thought it was just unassigned seats and that you had to wait until 24 hours before to get crappier seats?

Flown both spirit and frontier. Make sure your luggage fits their carry on size which is smaller than other airlines. It is supposed to go under the seat but I’ve placed it in the overhead bin and they’ve never said anything. If it doesn’t fit their size they will make you pay to check it before you board. If it won’t fit under the seat they also make you pay to use the overhead bin.

I just got back from a trip on Spirit two days ago. People who paid for carry ons get to board first so they know if it says group one on your boarding pass, you paid for a carry on. Be sure to pay for it prior to check in or they double the price. I just used a backpack as my personal item and had no problems. My sister even had 2 person items on the way home without paying and they didn't care. I think it had more to do with our flight being delayed and they still wanted to leave on time, though. I'm surprised they didn't get the cattle prods out to move us along faster. Most people had wheeled luggage and no one said anything. The measurements on the website state that the wheels must be included in the measurements. Speaking of crappier seats, we paid $3 extra so we could seat closer to each other and it turned out to be the crappier seats. On both of our flights, the last 4 or 5 rows were smaller and less cushioned than all the other seats and had a tiny sliver of metal for a tray table. And of course, I was stuck next to extremely large men that took half of my seat on both segments. I paid extra for that.

Okay that officially sounds awful. I am just curious how airlines are going to get people to pay for overhead bin space when how can you really tell? Unless you end up like Spirit and only allow below level so you always know?
