  • Does anyone go to Mexico to get their car worked on?

If you live near the border, is it worth driving your car down there to save $? How much money could one stand to save. Reason being, my clutch is going out. It would be $500 at least in labor here in the States. I've read the cost of living in Mexico is about 40-50% less than in the States..

While I don't know how far you live from the border, just seems like a lot of work to go outside the country to save some money get your clutch replaced. At the very least have you looked on CL for mechanics providing side work at discounted rate?

Regardless of country, I'd also be cautious of safety. In case the vehicle were to break down or you're stranded in an unfamiliar location.

While I've worked as a mechanic, I'd be a little skeptical of that option, unless you're truly desperate. Otherwise my answer is more inclined to find a trusted mechanic from a referral in regards to quote and shop around, or ask about side work/discounted rate. But that's really stretching it, IMO.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Isn't the OP well beyond their post requirement for posting links and pictures or whatever else? Even if they're just posting up questions to be chatty, this is kind of an interesting topic.

Mechanic/shop time and also autobody/collision repair rates are variable by region. Going "across the border" doesn't have to mean Mexico or Canada. You might find a $10/hr or more swing in the hourly labor charge or more just by having a vehicle worked on in a rural versus urban area, across state lines, etc. It's going to depend on the car, and dealer versus independent shop, of course, but labor rates do vary.
        History will judge the complicit.

I hadn't thought about looking on CL. I'll give it a try. The most reputable shop in town (but still ran by a young guy who does it because he loves it) wants $500 just in labor. My car is worth about $3k, I suppose.

I'd say that it is probably best to stay in the states to get your car worked on. Just to stay on the safe side of things.
