  • Advice on selling old cell phones

In the course of decluttering, I've gotten to our stock of old cell phones. We have quite a few (about a dozen). They range from fairly recent to rather old. I want to get rid of them and would love to get whatever I can for them.

Can you suggest some places for me to research their value (other than ebay, of course)? I know there are sites that buy old phones. I just don't know which are legit and best to deal with.

Any tips would be appreciated. I'm sure at least some of these phones still have some resale value.

Gazelle.com is my first choice. But they usually want late model phones.

http://www.cashforcomputerscrap.com/ is my second, they buy old electronic items and boards. Note be careful there is another company with ALMOST the same name that is a scam in my opinion. I have delt with these guys before myself and they are on the up and up IMHO.

One of the sites I sold my iPhone 3GS to low balled me after giving me a higher quote. It works like this. You go to the site, specify your phone, determine its condition (ie, broken, fair, very good condition, immaculate, etc.), and the site quotes you a price. It then allows you to print out a free shipping label to ship your phone to them. When they received my phone they called me back saying they could give me $75 and not the $150 quoted because it had scratches or other cosmetic signs of wear even though I labeled my phone as "fair" when I went to the site. They had my phone so I didn't have much leverage. We were able to negotiate the price up to $90 but I didn't get the $150 which was quoted. I believe the name of the site was cash for iphones. It was a bad experience overall and I'd rather go the Ebay route next time.

I thought about that. How do you suggest assigning value to them for the deduction?

Donate them. Deduct them from your taxes. Feel good about yourself. Value can be determined from Ebay. If it's less than $500, the IRS won't come a knockin'. If it's more, they still won't. You don't need to be exact.

I bought my latest phone from a private seller on our local Buy 'n Sell site [Kijijji + name of city] having researched what I thought was fair market value. Likewise sold my [hated] 3 month old phone for 20% discount which I saw as fair market value. I've sold two previous phones locally as parents want cheap phones on their provider for their younger children
