  • Need some advice on credit union and insufficient fees

First off i apologize for the bad punctuation and grammar i've had a learning disability my whole life.

I got hit with about three insufficient fees cause paypal, the charges were $9.00,3.00 and $5.50 which cause about 160 dollar in fees, there is no way i can afford that i pleaded with the credit union for help but she refused and stated i authorized those charges which is bs,this was my first fee since i opened that account years ago.I told the manager i couldn't afford that and i would pay monthly to reduce it but she stated it was close after 30 days.

I was thinking about joining another credit union which i will never link too paypal.

Will those fees multiple if i just pay a buck here and there on them or pay on it when they close the account?

FYI, I posted years ago, when I had debt problems, and I didn't follow the advice I got from here. Since then I had a dislocated shoulder in April 2012 which had medical bills with it and have more bills than money and work a PT job too. I am worse than back then. I am not the best person to respond to this yet I had this experience this spring with insufficient fees with my credit union due to a mistake with duplicate bill pay--one with my credit union and one on the credit card website bill pay setup. My solution, rather than think about a credit union signature loan to cover the bills and the overcharges, I opted for a 39% payday loan which I am stuck for the next 4 months. My mistake and my solution was very bad. If I could do it over I would do it different.

Now back to your situation: Your insufficient fees were due to your not paying attention to your charges and using a debit card in the first place. I do not use debit cards at all. I don't believe in them. I would use credit card over that of a debit card, as a credit card does not raid your bank account. Your overuse of your debit card resulted in the insufficent fees. Your credit union had every right to charge for those charges. It is your fault for not keeping track of your stuff. If you can't afford it, get a signature loan at a loan shark place as a last resort. They will gladly take you into their loving arms! If you want to link a Paypal account to anything, do it to a real credit card that has no relationship to your bank checking account. A signature loan could put your bank account back to life--just ask them if you can pay the amount due in one lump sum if they will reinstate your bank account at the credit union. It won't hurt to ask. Consider the extra fees as part of experience and don't do it again. If you can, go the cash route and pay in cash and, avoid using paypal and any credit cards(I am still working on that one). Good luck.

Why exactly do you feel that you don't owe those fees?

Have you taken up the matter with PayPal? Why did they allow three unauthorized charges? What protection do they provide against unauthorized charges costing you overdraft fees? Will they be refunding your money for the three unauthorized charges? Will they be refunding your money for the overdraft fees?

You may or may not have the option to join another credit union until the overdraft fees have been paid. You should call the new credit union and ask.

As to whether or not your overdrawn account will continue to charge new fees, you should ask the credit union. They should be happy to tell you.
