  • Uber and Lyft

    Has anyone used Uber or Lyft? A taxi ride to/from LAX airport from my residence costs $30 each way. Uber calculates the cost ranging from $12 - $16. I may try Uber to save half off the taxi fare.

    I have not used Uber, but I have used Lyft and much prefer it to taking a taxi. Unfortunately Seattle has decided to be dicks about ride sharing and have imposed very low caps on the number of vehicles these companies can have on the road at any given time. What this means is there is almost never a car available when I need one, and last time I checked they don't have the ability to put yourself in a queue for one. So I rarely use Lyft anymore. If they add the ability to queue then I will maybe use them again, depending on what wait times are like.

      I rode it today to LAX, total cost was $10. Some of the good points;

      1) Upon ordering it shows all the Available cars on a map with estimated arrival times.
      2) text upon arrival the car arrived.
      3) fare is automatically taken from my Paypal (or credit card if you choose to register it)
      4) no tip necessary

        I use Uber all the time and love it. No cash, you can call them on your app, they actually come on time and you can track exactly where the car is on the app. All receipts come to your email - so great for business travel and tracking expenses.

        I've really had nothing but pleasant experiences. There are so many issues with DC cabs - they now have to accept credit cards by law, but I've had so many experiences where they'll give me attitude or an excuse that their card machine is "broken", then magically starts working again when I say I don't have any cash.

          Living in NYC, I haven't had much need for Uber (our cabs are plentiful, and at times when they're not, Uber's crazy demand pricing goes into effect.) I have used it a few times, because I had some credits so I figured I may as well use them.

          In LA, however, Uber is great - it's more difficult to hail a cab from the street, especially in a popular area.

          Over all, I'm a fan.
