Again, based on math this doesn't play out. If it's about togetherness and convenience, that's different. Spend the cash and enjoy the time together! I've done the same thing. But minivans get about 20MPG, or about 5.4 miles per dollar. Add the cost of the rental and subtract the potentially $50 you are saving on fuel for 4 hours of driving assuming it's the worst MPG vehicle out there, and the savings don't add up. Drive 2 cars and use the extra $700 cash you would have spent on the minivan rental on doing something really cool together at your vacation spot.

    My vote.

$70/day for 2 days for our scenario = $140. We for sure saved $30 on parking because we had to pay $15/day to park on beaches per car. So $110. Gas was $50 to fill up, assume we save $40 since we would have paid $40 each car. So we are at $70 for us to not use our cars. With some wear and tear I don't know what the value would be of that at least 300 miles rt. Either way $70 is what it cost to rent the car.

Got it. Your first post said you were going to spend $900 on the rental car. That seemed excessive for the use. Another option is a bit of a gamble. By joining the Emerald club with National you get to choose any car on the Emerald aisle but still pay your contracted price. I rent an economy and pick up whatever I want. There's almost always a minivan, but that's the catch..."almost always" isn't grand when you get a corolla and needed a grand caravan. Not sure if you can check availability ahead of time. Have fun on vacation!

Decided not to rent for the week. But I was tempted since $900 is a drop in the bucket compared to buying a minivan.

If you don't have any option left. than obviously you moves to rent a car.

Just rent a car that you think you really can afford. Nicely but not that costly.
