  • Work vs School

I've known for quite a while that I was going to be getting laid off on August 1st. I've been fortunate enough to have the luxury of choosing what job I'm going to transition too.

Our current household income is roughly $7,000 take home a month, depending on overtime. We've gotten pretty used to this and have budgeted in a Roth and will have our debt all paid off except the mortgage by the end of August.

I'm also going to school full time, on my GI Bill, which is free. I'll finish my masters in economics in fall of '15, with a BS in econ and a BA in criminal justica administration.

I've been offered a job that will change our household income to roughly $10,000 take home a month, but I won't be able to keep going to school while I work.

I have two thoughts on this. First, it's more money than I'm going to make in the midwest with a MA in Economics, so why does school matter from that point of view. Then, I also look at that I have several friends with my same background who have been hired at a job that would change our household monthly take home to $15,500 a month, but I'm gone a week, home a week, rinse and repeat. I don't have kids, so that sounds great right now.

I want to finish my Masters, but I don't have a financially logical reason aside from that it's free so long as I finish it by 2025 - which obviously isn't pressing.

I feel like if I'm going to switch jobs into something that I can't go to school, then take the one that pays better until I have kids, then go back to school when I have kids. But even then... is it going to be possible to do with kids? Or should I just finish it now while I have the time and worry about money later?

I personally would get the degree. Jobs come and go but credentials don't. If you already started it and its free might as well finish it up before the kids, that way no one person is stuck with doing too much if that makes sense.

If your not hurting for the money I'd finish. Before deciding anything though I would look into seeing if there was any possible way at all to finish the degree with the 10K job, whether that was with online classes or getting experience credits. I know there are some reputable MBA schools in which people can take all their credits online, I'd look into seeing if that was an option for you as a transfer sort of thing.

Also how close are you to finishing the degree?

I agree with permanent temp- get the degree (just be sure to not over pay just go to a reasonable and hopefully local school) and then move on with your life.

I think its better if we manage both things together. I know its sounds difficult but can be achievable. Because at end of the degree, you would have both things practical experience and your educational credentials as well.

School is good because that's the only way for you to find a better job in the future. but of course it's better to go to school for us to gain knowledge. It's good to learn new things everyday.

Since the degree will not cost you anything, you should finish. You may not stay at this job and need the degree later.
