@ Permanent Temp – Yes I think I see your perspective. I agree with your scenarios other than the ones I first mentioned. Mrs. Eagle pointed out that they probably used credit cards for the trip. They drove so there was no non-refundable tickets. And they did try to save money by staying with friends along the way.

Sorry but I don’t believe people should go on vacations on credit cards. I guess it’s the way we were brought up. Like Disneysteve said it’s a change in outlook by saving up the money instead of paying 20-30% interest on credit cards. Then again we don’t go on vacations we can’t pay cash for. We save up ahead of time. We’ve been on very few vacations since we’ve been married. We try instead to do things locally. Maybe a little bed and breakfast every now and again.

We did go to FL last year. Our first real vacation in about 4 years. The tickets were paid for 5-6 months in advance and we stayed with family the entire time. This idea some people have of going on vacation every year baffles me. Particularly when they’re already facing financial turmoil.

The people from the OP did pay down some debt earlier this year they owed with their tax return, etc. But now they’re back in debt with this emergency.

The other issue is they called their church as there is a fund set up to help people in need to see if the leaders would help them financially… So they want someone else to pay for said emergency. Right…

I think people can make whatever sort of choices they please, as long as they aren't asking me for financial help. If you're going to ask ME for MY money, sorry, you're going to hear what I think.

I just reread the original post. Call me old-fashioned but I can't imagine posting on Facebook that we were having financial difficulties. It isn't that I'm too proud to ask for help, but I wouldn't announce it to the world like that. It isn't something I would want to tell everyone on my Friends list. It is something that we would handle in one on one coversations with a few select people we are close with who would understand and be most willing and able to help.

Maybe if there were something really catastrophic, like a medical disaster, I could imagine doing that, but not to fix my car.
