Anyone who has coped with an unexpected, sudden evacuation or life threatening event like flood, earthquake, tornado, forest fire etc. will do whatever they can to have money, water, gas in the car and easy to eat snacks like breakfast bars at hand, 'just in case.'
Your need to understand your home insurance policy, what it covers and under what circumstances they will pony up money. Is it full replacement value? Sewer backup or flood damage? You need to be able to provide proof should a claim be necessary. Even the tiniest fender bender needs photo of area, damage, other individual, and ID. Easiest is to take pictures of your stuff with receipt, transfer to a USB drive and store off premises. Helpful to keep manual/pamphlet with original bill stapled inside the cover in a page protecter to facilitate storage in a big 'D' ring binder or easy access storage of choice.
Having suffered the mess of a break-in, I now include brand and model number or any easily accessed identifier. The job of the insurance claim's agent is to pay out as little as possible. The claim's agent is not the same guy that sold you insurance, he represents the Insurance Company and their prime responsibility is to provide dividends and value to their shareholders.
