Nothing like paying a premium for convenience.

A decent bag of coffee beans/grounds = $10ish and it probably makes 40-50 cups of coffee?

Let me know how much that same brand of coffee is for 40 k cups...

    Yep...massive fail.

It is absurd to lock consumers into a specific consumable under the guise of "ensuring consistent quality" when the real reason has more to do with a company losing money due to expired patents. My prediction is that people will see right through this and not buy the new coffee maker.

What's next? Requiring an internet connection to brew coffee, because the machine needs to download new water chemistry profile tables and heating element device drivers?

About twice that - generally around $0.50/cup. So 40 cups would be about $20.

Also, I know a lot of people buy theirs at Bed, Bath, and Beyond with the ever-present 20% off coupons making the price less than $0.50/cup.

You can also buy the refillable pod for about $10 and then use any coffee you want.

          +1

And I use a coffee maker that cost < $20.

There certainly is a premium for convenience, but as long as it is affordable and important to you, that's not necessarily a bad thing. How many of you bake all of your own bread, for example? We do occasionally but mostly buy it ready-made. We're willing to pay the premium for convenience.

As for coffee, my wife likes having the variety of products with the Keurig, not having to drink the same coffee every single day. She is also very sensitive to freshness and when she used a traditional machine, she would end up trashing coffee that had gone bad before she got to use it. With the Keurig, that's never a problem, so there's less waste.

My wife was never one to buy coffee out so that wasn't an issue for her but for many people, switching from a $3 coffee at Starbucks to a 50-cent coffee at home is a big savings.

We use the Coffee Bean CBTL machine. The pods are $0.60 each and come in 10 packs for $6 at the store. The coffee tastes dramatically better than a Keurig. I'm actually glad the CBTL pods are the only ones that fit because It controls quality. I feel confident that any CBTL pod is going to make a great cup.
