  • Do you make your cereal correctly?

I found this funny. I went over to a friend's house and realized that I had been making my cereal all wrong for all these years. In commercials they show you filling up the bowl with the cereal and then putting some fruit on top. My friend puts fruit into the bowl and them puts the cereal on top. When I asked why, she said that it's healthier to have more fruit and it makes her cereal last about twice as long. When you put in the fruit first, you don't put as much cereal into the bowl as you would the other way around.

I guess I've been doing it "wrong" too. I don't put fruit in my cereal. If I want fruit, I eat fruit. If I want cereal, I eat cereal.

I just skip the cereal part of the bowl. It is a highly processed grain - be it corn or wheat or soy, we have too much of it in our diet already, as these things are being fed to animals and even fish.

They are so processed, it has practically no difference from sugar in terms of how fast it is released into your bloodstream. When I want a simple carb, I might as well enjoy myself and have a doughnut. I don't see cereal as being more healthy.

You're probably better off skipping the cereal and just having the fruit. Instead of cereal have some oatmeal instead.

I don't put fruit in my cereal either. My cereal is either steel cut oatmeal, or grape nuts with 2% milk. My fruit consists of those individually wrapped Sunsweet Ones prunes, which I munch on throughout the day.

Spent a bit of time on a cereal aisle awhile back reading the labels. The cereals marketed as "healthy" are a significant drop in sugar from the candy-cereals, but are still quite sugary compared to plain-nothing-added-oats. I've been making 6 servings of oatmeal in a rice-cooker/slow cooker once a week and then refrigerating it. I cut out a slice each morning and microwave. Very satisfied and I know exactly what goes into it.

I made some baked banana oatmeal a couple of days ago--it was delicious. In that case, the banana was all mixed in.
