  • Restricted Stock Units count towards Net Worth

I get RSU's from my company each year that vest after 3 years. I have been with the company for nearly 6 years, so I have been getting a nice bonus from them every year for a while now. This will be the first year that they are really big. As long as I work at this company, they will continue to vest. I see these as different from a bonus in that I know the amount and as long as I am working at the company, I know I will get them. I do not budget the RSU's, they are just gravy when they come. Right now, I plan to put all future RSU income into my retirement savings. But should I count them in my net worth calculations? That would more than double my net worth as there are a lot of RSU's.

    Thanks,

    Tom

I include the vested shares in my net worth but leave out the non-vested ones.

I agree. If they're vested, that's your money so it counts. The ones that are not yet vested are not yet your money so they don't count.

Got it. ALthough I can sell as soon as they vest and I do.
