  • Paying for Private School in a Poor School District might be worth it?

My husband and I live in a terrible school District (2 or 3 rating out of 10). My daughter is 3 now and in less than 3 years will be attending Kindergarten. We only have 10 years 10 months left on our mortgage so I am debating between staying in this house and paying it off (and paying for private school) or moving (and taking a loss on this house) to another house in a good school district where she can attend public school. How much do you generally pay for before/after care at a public school? I’m trying to find information for the area we are considering moving to but so far I’ve found nothing (1 friend mentioned it could be 300-500/month).

For the private school she would probably be attending the before/after care rates are so cheap that school + before&after care is 450/month. If the public school before/after care program is even close to that number I’m thinking that it might make sense to just stay where we are.
Does anyone know of tax breaks related to paying for private schooling? Or has anyone ever been in a similar situation and what did you ultimately decide?

We solved similar problem just last autumn once our daughter was about to turn 3 years. I can't suggest anything about tax as we live in Spain but what I can tell for sure it definitely worth to pay for a private school. We live in area where education is far from best (same as your 2-3/10) but we notice significant difference bet public and this private school. If the price is affordable I would choose the private one and stayed in your own house. Especially if you have only 10 years to pay the mortgage.

Thanks Leraldo. Having a little under 11 years left on our mortgage (but also slightly underwater) is a weird predicament to be in. If only we had given thought to school districts years ago when we bought this place.

It's impossible to foresee everything especially in such long term.

Are you saying that the private school tuition and before/after school care is a combined total of $450/mo?

Is that the price all the way through or only for K?

That is a very low price and if you like that school, I would strongly consider it.

Another thing to consider.....do you plan to have more children? This might influence what you will do.

We have 3 kids and used to live in a horrible school district. They attended a private school for a while and I worked.
