  • Emergency Fund came in handy today

My windshield on my truck cracked yesterday. I'm having it replaced tomorrow for $200. Not a huge deal, but it's nice to know I can just pay for it and move on. I went to the bank on my lunch break and got the money.

And, in case anyone is wondering; No, my insurance doesn't cover it. A chip is covered 100%, but a crack forces the windshield to be completely replaced. Therefore, it falls under my comprehensive deductible which is $500. So, I just paid out of pocket.

Same situation here. $500 comp deductible, no glass coverage otherwise. My windshield took a hit recently, and it spread before I could get it repaired. One of the cracks is inching up into the field of vision on the driver's side.

I have the money to repair it, but I'm waiting. It's still winter, and road crews are still laying down "sand" when it gets slick out. "Sand" in quotes because some days it seems more like gravel, as the paint chips and window dings would attest to.
    History will judge the complicit.

The problem here isn't the sand but the potholes. There is so much loose road material that things are flying all over. I got hit by a rock a couple of weeks ago and chipped my windshield but I have no plan to replace it unless it turns into a crack.

It's even worse when they go around and patch the potholes because then there is all the loose filler stuff that they use that sprays all around for a few days after the patch job.

I've had success repairing those small 'pings' on the windshield that have potential to 'starburst.' Having carefully cleaned the windshield, using vinegar at the divot as degreaser, I've slowly, carefully filled the depression with Crazy Glue. It has always held and avoided cracking or spreading out. It's the type fix that needs to be done the same day. There is so much gravel/sand spread here it's practical to keep a fast food vinegar sleeve and Crazy Glue in the glove box.

Yep, I wrote about a furnace emergency that required EF money.

Road shrapnel, especially after this winter, has been extraordinarily plentiful. The other day, a truck in front of me hit a pothole with such force that I'd predict a hundred pounds worth of frozen slush dropped off it in one shot. Luckily, I was far enough behind to plan and not get hit by any of it.
