Go to the gym. It's good for your soul as well as your body.

I guess for many of us it is like buying a treadmill, stair stepper, or exercise bike that turns into a clothes catcher. If you go and it improves your health there may be something to it. Just spending money and not going is wasteful. You know yourself better anyone here so it is a decision only you in the end can make.

With all due respect to the posters who answered I think the OP is asking how to get out of the 1-year contract not the advice how to stay in shape.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer because I don't have a gym membership. With all this running around the house and working full-time I keep myself in shape without the gym.

billybob: I did a search and the only suggestions I could find were: break your leg (even better if done at the gym), or move at least 50 miles away from the gym. People were successful getting out of their contract in those situations. (Probably not what you wanted to hear, but.... )

I really did move and got out of mine. You could try. I am on my 3rd treadmill, I wore the first two out!

Speak with the manager; maybe they'll work something out so that you can pay a minimal fee. Also is there a service that was offered and no longer available that happened to me and I used that to my advantage to cancel my membership

                    Re: Cancelling Gym Membership...

If you're simply wanting your money back because you aren't going, I can't see that happening. I would bet a very high percentage of people with gym memberships don't go. If gyms gave refunds for that, they probably wouldn't be able to stay in business.

You had the right idea when you got the membership. My recommendation is to use it. I can personally attest that you'll feel better both physically and psychologically. If you're worried about how you'll be perceived by others, **** them.

Aside from a service that's not being offered (probably a good angle) . . . you could try to find something disgusting/embarrassing and use that to your advantage. (Mold somewhere, improperly cleaned or malfunctioning equipment, sour towels, rude employees, whatever you can find that they don't want "going public".)

I cancelled mine but they made me pay out 30% of the remaining sum owed. It was better than paying $20 per week for not going... Have a look at your contract there would have to be some kind of fee for cancellation but I'm sure you could cancel it - things happen.

Use the membership. Make time to go, even for 30 minutes of less if you can. It will benefit your health and well-being, tone you up for the summer season and not penalize you with heavy cancellation fees.

Don't pay your bill. I bet they cancel your membership then. Of course you have to worry about collection agencies calling you then...
