I put everything on google drive. Its free...and allows you to store 15GB of data per account. Depending on how many accounts you have can add up to a LOT of space.
Of course its also good to have a hard copy on hand such as an external hard drive...or even backing up to DVD's too.
Its nice having external drives now that are up to 4TB...but man...if you have that thing filled up and the drive fails...not good! I never go above 1TB for that very reason. Thats the same reason why...if you watch a good photographer at a wedding...you'll notice him swapping out memory cards 2 or 3 times throughout the event. Because if one of his cards happens to fail and those pictures cannot be retrieved...he will have 2 more cards with pictures to choose from.
