Re: Could you live on $420 a month?

I could not live on that amount. Remotely. I don't think even if I could live on that amount that I would want to. . . that's way too much of a sacrifice to me.

I just found the book, the couple that retired at 35, had $500,000 in cd's paying 8% interest. This was in the late eighties!! Wonder if they are still retired.??

What is the name of the Book Ima? I would love to read it, living off interest is something that has always been interesting. We now have the lottery in North Carolina and I am choosing not to play it, I had played Powerball in South Carolina but had to make an effort to drive down there. Now the effort will be gone I will have to resist the temptation to play Powerball when the jackpot is in the triple digit millions catergory.

A friend of mine moved to Puerto Armuelles, Panama and bought a place with 30 ft of frontage on the Pacific Ocean for $16,700 USD. Albeit the place needs some work that is dirt cheap. A live in maid costs $150 a month. Hired construction help costs a little more than a dollar an hour. The currency in Panama is the USD. I think $420 a month would be enough to live on in Panama.

                Probably...

I would have to sell my house, my cars, my stuff (cause Id have no where to keep it- maybe Id keep a change of clothes and a blanket), get rid of my dogs, my puter, my cell phone, learn to eat grass and leaves,....let's see, I think that would leave me enough to pay taxes and buy a decent sized cardboard box to live in...hopefully I could find a spare shopping cart somewhere to haul my few things around....why am I doing this again??

                (just kidding, of course)

On The Oprah Show on Friday, April 14th there will be people who are making it on minimum wage.

In 1992-1995 I had to live off of $100.00 a month after I paid my rent, bills and bought my medicine. My medicine cost $400.00 a month. Out of the $100.00 I had to buy food!! I learned to cook very cheap but I did eat. Pizzas, McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, etc. were delicacies.

Thier is no way I could even if my house was paid for my electric & gas run over $200 a month alone & taxes & ins on house run $200 a month & I dont see right now anywhere I could live cheaper unless I moved back to a trailer & I still dont think that would be any cheaper!!

I did also in 1996 lived off very little I lived in a trailer paid daycare $260 a month trailer & lot rent were about $300 then electric & gas were about $100 & ins & taxes around $150 a month & I only made about $1000 a month after phone bill & gas thier wasnt much left I will tell you that I made alot of potatoes & grilled cheese for my daughter & I at that time!!
LOoking back I probably should have went on state aid but I never did & for that I am very proud!!! And also no help from her dad. At least I may have taught my girls a lesson where thier is a will thier will be a way!!

No I couldn't live on that amount.

If I had a job and was working, I would live within my means.

I would have keep the interest in the account to earn even more

Re: Could you live on $420 a month?

Actually at one time I lived on 440 a month. I lived in subsized housing so my rent was based on income. I paid 49.00 a month. But paid my own gas and electric. Had food stamps and WIC. paid for bus, diapers and other needs. Some how we managed and I had no clue about living frugal.

Now I am unemployed. I have unemployment and one part time job, and one cleaning job that pays cash. We are barely making it. I sure hope a full time job comes soon.

by itself, no way! 420 barely covers the mortgage. nevermind the luxuries, you know: lights, water, food. If you are already working and making it then sure. but I would just save it or something. wouldn't need it.

The name of the book is "Cashing in on the american dream, How to retire at 35" by Paul Terhorst. I believe the couple live in Argentine.
