If we wanted another 1 bedroom that allows cats we could find one for a lot less than $1212 a month in our neighborhood. The problem is that we have put up curtain track in the living room to give my daughter her own space when she is here. The landlord said to go ahead and make any modifications we wanted because the entire apartment would be remodeled when we leave anyway. If we moved I am thinking it's not very likely we'd get permission to do that again, and a two bedroom is going to cost us no less than $1600 and closer to $2000. DD's dad is already giving me crap about the bedroom situation, and I don't need him making our lives any harder. Since we are really stuck staying in this immediate area we don't have a lot of options.

Well, we may have other options after all. I checked craigslist today and saw 3 two bedroom units for under 1000 in rent. Cats allowed. I emailed one and DH will call the other one after 6 tonight like it says to in the ad. (Two of the units are in the same building). The fact that apartments exist in that price range is encouraging. The last time I looked there was nothing under $1600. Am thinking we should just keep looking every day until we get one. If we have to pay the increase for a few months it won't be an issue, but I am more concerned about the likelyhood of the landlord continuing to massively jack up the rent every year or two if we stay.

Two of them are gone. The other hasn't called back yet. I kind of expected that. I will start checking craigslist daily and see what turns up. Luckily we have the means to move quickly if we need to.

I am also looking at large one bedroom units since we could get a much larger much nicer unit for less than what our rent will be going up to. We can always let my daughter have the bedroom and put screens around the bed for DH and I in the living room. We actually have a lot less crap than she does, so it could work out well. I emailed one just now that is 50 square feet larger, W&D and dishwasher, a patio and balcony and covered parking for over 100$ less than the increased rent on this place.

I think we need to do what it takes to get the hell out of this apartment though. There is just so much negative energy here now.

How long does your husband have? Will you be able to maintain the rent payment after he passes? Will your housing needs change?

I wouldn't move unless where you move can be supported once you are a widow. If he is terminal, maybe moving is not a great way to spend his last few months??

              Just playing devil's advocate.

Is he well insured? have you discussed plans for when he passes? One positive think about this terrible situation is that you have time to plan for his passing. I'm sorry.

The best answer is we have no idea. There are hundreds of clinical trials being done all over the world on stem cell treatments right now that could potentially save his life if they work and become available in time. An organ transplant could also buy him time, but right now he does not want to go that route. I am doing everything I can to change his mind. I am trying to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Once he does pass we will be significantly less tied to this particular neighborhood, which is very expensive and rising. Since he is blind and transportation can be in issue it makes the most sense right now for us to live within walking distance of his work and medical care. This will especially be the case if he decides to pursue getting a transplant.

Was a reason given for the increase?
