  • My old lawn mower

Many, many years ago my parents wanted to rid themselves of their riding lawn mower in pursuit of being more active and the smaller foot print in their yard due to projects that took away their grass. They offered to give it to me in trade for a self propelled walk behind. I saved a bunch of money on the deal so it was a no brainer.

Fast forward 10 years... I still have the same mower. Each year I bring it out and do some maintenance on it to get it running, and each year I say, "This is probably her last year" but year after year, she starts and I see no reason to get a new one if my "antique" is still working.

In the past year one of my neighbors laughed at me as I dismantled my mower, did some maintenance and put it back together as he yelled out, "Anytime you need my mower (New that year) you can use it". He really is a great neighbor, but I was determined to get mine working and to mow my lawn.

This past week my neighbor on the left was seen walking past his riding mower and pulling out his walk behind mower to mow his yard that is larger than mine... Assuming there is something wrong with his "new" rider. Two days ago I saw my neighbor on the right out working on his "New" mower at 9 at night... they still have yet to mow their lawn...

I bet they are not laughing at my old mover now (I mowed yesterday).

I do the same thing with my 94 olds cutlass. Every year I bring it in for safety and emissions inspections and every time it passes but I keep telling myself "one more year". Like your mower, if it works I don't see the point of upgrading just to buy new.

My push mower is showing its age as well. But, it starts up on the second pull everytime, so I'm keeping it.

Wow... So this morning someone pulled up with a trailer and off loaded a riding lawn mower so the neighbor could mow their lawn... As they were mowing, I could hear them running over stuff (They have a dog in the yard and I am assuming it's dog toys/bones)... When they did a loop around the front of the house I saw that they were riding it with a front tire where the bead came off and the tire was flipping around on the rim... a second riding mower broken....

Finally, the guy across the street (That laughed at me doing the maintenance) came over and offered his riding mower so they could finish their yard...

Just goes to show that proper Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) goes a long way. Maybe someday they will learn.

I use a push mower to mow my acre of lawn. It's reliable, cheap and good exercise. I've owned riders in the past (most of my neighbors do) and consider them an expensive headache. Even if my pushmower quit tomorrow I could replace it for the cost of most repairs to riding mowers. The neighbors probably think I'm crazy or broke. So be it!
