When i was 20 i was involved in a fender bender. I called and got advice from a friends father. If i chose to pay out of pocket he said get a statement:

No injuries occurred
Work was completed to her satisfaction
She was satisfied and the issue was closed.

Friends father was attorney and formerly an insurance agent.

$1000 is probably accurate. Body work is not cheap. Tell her you can't cover it and get your insurance company involved.
