Some things are now free that we didn't have before.

Our council has built a series of free BBQ's in the parks. This free service has allowed families to enjoy the outdoors more. We often go up to the top of the range and have a BBQ overlooking the valley.

Free water fountains on the streets. No more - must buy water at the convenience stores or bring your own from a grocery or one you've refilled.

a park near my home charges cars coming in to park. now they charge people walking in through the gates and extra fee if you bring a pet.

As for things that used to be free I can't think of too much. I pretty much remember everything costing!

Used to get kidneys for free from the butcher when I was a kid. Love kidney pie. Now you pay and that is if you can find them!

I did ask. Syringes are $1.00 at both the Walgreens and CVS pharmacies, Main Street, Dunedin FL. These were also the pharmacies that wanted an astronomical amount for my son's antibiotic, that I got for a much reasonable price at Costco.

I now see that this incident should be reported. Thank you for this inside information. I will act accordingly.

Sorry this is off topic, I notice you live near me.. and when I gave birth I asked my my nurse at MPH for a couple!

Someone mentioned TV, but what about radio? Now people PAY to listen to the radio! That just cracks me up!

I'm racking my brain to come up with something that used to be free but isn't anymore. We still seem to have lots of free things.

*Water at restaurants
*Cookie for little kids at the grocery store
*McDonald's still gives away a free small cone to little kids
*Parking(BTW, used to not be free when I was a kid...they took out the meters a few years ago)
*All of our parks are free(can't imagine having to pay to go to a park?)
*We have a small public pool that kids aged 8 and under can swim for free
*Occasionally I see a gas station that charges for air, but most are still free
*Our library has a great youth program that gives away all kinds of free stuff in the summer and also started a program for adults!
*Local lakes and rivers are free
*Can still use a restroom at a gas station for free!LOL
*Can still get free food samples at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club
*Our dentist gives a coupon for free McDonald's french fries to each child
*My elementary school aged daughter still gets a lot of coupons for free foods when she hits certain goals at school...Pizza Hut pan pizza, Sonic, McDonald's Happy Meals

Hmmm. Those are some I can think of off the top of my head.

What's the difference between paying for cable TV and paying for satillite radio?

It's a luxury, but it provides a valuable service. You have hundreds of channel choices so you can find exactly what you enjoy and don't have to listen to commercials or a "morning team" nattering on for hours between songs.

I sure don't regret having it!

I don't remember a lot of things being free when I was a kid. I drink water all the time and I am usually not charged for it.

i agree with whomever asked about things that are free now that weren't before... anyone remember having to pay for a soda refill? and while not quite free, what about long distance rates: they've definitely taken a turn for the better.

These may still be free in some parts of the country, but not where I live now. But, I used to get a lot of free advertising items such as pencils, pens, calenders, rulers, yardsticks, keychains, rainhats (remember those? they folded up in a little pouch with the name of the bank or gas station on them.) I really miss getting matched (I guess bars still give them out, but I don't go to bars), air for tires (cost a quarter now), plastic cups. When I moved here I called to see if there was a 'Welcome Wagon"-where I came from they would come, tell you about the town and give a bunch of freebies and maps. I really really needed and still need a map. I was told to contact the chamber. So, I went to the local chamber, and they wanted $5 for their welcome kit that contained the maps. I told them forget it,

Well, to me, a song is a song. I listen to country music. I'm going to hear the same songs on a local free station or pay to hear the same song on a satellite channel. Commericials? Yeah. They don't bother me. And, I like the added benefit of local stations because I get all of my local news, weather, cancellation, etc. Plus, many of our local stations have giveaways. I've won everything from cash to movie tickets to a coffee maker!

Hey! If you enjoy paying the $$$$ to listen to satellite radio I don't have a problem with it! I'm not wasting my hard earned $$$$ on it though...
