  • Frugal Valentine

Had this show up in my facebook feed and it made me smile:

"Got my Valentine's bouquet & chocolates today. I told him he got the date wrong & that Friday is the day they go on sale."

Nice. That made me smile too.

Although, thinking about it, the timing is a bit rude. If a girl thinks full priced Valentine's gifts are unnecessary, that's something she should communicate before the guy goes out and buys them.

Gift after Valentine Day? I don't think so. People should gift on the day itself. Doesn't matter if the next day is full of discounts.

Traditionally my husband has purchased a box of chocolates for me at the post-Valentine's Day clearance sales. Not this year tho. I still have some leftover from the post-Christmas clearance!

To each their own as far as whether or not a gift must be on the actual day. Saving money in order to prepare for a comfortable old age together is the most romantic gift I can think of.

SUPER LOL! I don't think she still have to mention such things after receiving the gifts from her boyfriend. Giving is not about the cost, it's about sincerity and the thought that someone's giving you because you are special to him. After all Valentines happens just once in year to still consider the big sale that would happen the following day.

True, Valentine's is just one day of the year. So is Christmas. And Thanksgiving. Don't forget Halloween, that's only on October 31st each year, not October 30th or November 1st. New Year's (and also New Year's Eve; don't lump them together, they're both separate days that only occur once a year!). Easter's only one day a year, don't cheap out and buy the Easter baskets for your kids the day after. Independence Day is only one day a year, don't even THINK about buying a bunch of fireworks for 50-90% off on July 5th and having a celebration that day. Ooh, haven't even touched on Mother's Day or Father's Day yet, you know they're only one day a year, right?

Come to think of it, pretty much every month has a "special" day that happens only once a year (hurry in for our Labor Day sale, don't miss it else you'll have to wait until next year!). Really, it's just a day on a calendar. The whole world isn't going to end if you give your significant other a cheap box of chocolates and clearance roses on February 15th, or if you open Christmas presents on December 27th.

The one possible exception would be your wedding anniversary. It's fine if you go out for a fancy dinner (or picnic, or whatever) a few days early/late; but under no circumstances are you to give the impression that you may have forgotten the date. So no coming home and saying "Oh, um, I guess I can take you out this weekend".

The most beautiful Valentine gift I ever received cost my then-fiance very little. He made a gorgeous scrapbook full of beautiful pictures, cut from magazines, interspersed with poetry. He wrote some of it, but if that is not your bent, just use the tried and true.

Sometimes an experience is better than stuff. Sign you and your Valentine up for a cooking class, dance lessons or another shared experience. Rec centers and community colleges have lots of cheap classes to choose from. You really don’t have to spend $85 to $250 on a romantic dinner at a restaurant. Why not have a nice candlelit dinner at home? You could even get all dressed up for it. If you know you’re going to be too tired to cook after work on Valentine’s Day, which falls on a Thursday this year, order a special meal ahead of time and pick it up on your way home.

That's pretty funny and the main reason my wife and I don't celebrate Valentine's Day; it is way too commercial. Any good relationship does special things for eachother randomly throughout the year anyway, we don't need a special day for it.
