Yes. Personally, I am better off today than I was 4 years ago. My net worth has more than doubled in the past 4 years mostly do to me buying into several stocks after they were beaten into the ground in late 2008.

So far, we're at 100% for "better than 4 years ago." I wonder if the national pollsters are reading this forum.

310 have viewed this but only 16 (now 17) have responded. I'm not sure what conclusion to draw from that. I'm definitely better off, by the way.

            Yes and no.

4 years ago I had a job which paid about $5500/yr more, and had about $6k more in cash savings. The job was an ok job, but wasn't really using my education.

Then I lost that job, survived for several years on less than $1k/mo plus my savings while going back to school.

Now I am slowly rebuilding my savings, and have a job which I love most of the time AND using my education.

So financially, no I am not better off at all, but personally/job satisfaction wise, yes, I am definitely better off.

              No. I highly doubt it.

True. I think this is important to focus on. Those who choose to be involved with their finances, manage their money, budget their spending and focus on their investments can do well regardless of economic conditions.

Dave Ramsey loves when people call in and mention that their income has risen significantly over the past few years. "You got a raise in a recession," is his typical response.

I think far too many people have a victim mentality. "I can't make any money because there's a recession." "It isn't worth investing because the market will just crash." "I can't get a better job in this economy." You can make all of the excuses you want but the fact is that there are always opportunities out there.

Probably hard for some to admit that they aren't better off in the midst of all the cheery news that others are posting.

Debt-wise, we are worse off due to a huge medical bill that we have no way of paying. We are still waiting to see if we will get any 'help' from the hospital and doctors. Husbands health is worse and minecontinues to go down hill although I am much better at dealing with it and have learned to find joy in the midst of it. Financially I have been able to tuck some money aside which I couldn't do in the first few years that we were married. Some things are better off--I have a great new DIL! and some are worse off, so there isn't a loud yes or no. I would like to see this question come up again in 4 years and be able to say yes we are better off and none of it having to do with politics or who is the president as at a day to day level, I never see them doing anything to help improve my situation.

I think most of the folks on this forums that are better off are that way due to their own hard work and sacrifices.
