  • VoIP: Is it time to switch?

How many of you got rid of your traditional phone line and are using VoIP (Vonage, etc.)? It's really killing me what I'm spending a month on my phone bill. Are there hidden charges I should know about? Have you experienced any service problems? I heard once that enhanced 911 service is not available with VoIP -- is this still an issue?

We just recently completed the switch and are using SunRocket (VoIP) exclusively. We signed up with them several months ago and used them for all long distance just to see if we liked it. We had been paying about $35 a month just for basic phone service and using pre-paid calling cards for long distance. SunRocket charges $199 for a full year of phone service with all the bells and whistles plus unlimited long distance....a huge savings. VoIP still has a few glitches but we feel it is well worth the occasional inconvenience for the savings. There are times when you get a bad connection and have to try again and there have been a few times when the call just dropped out in the middle of a conversation, much like a cell phone. We do keep a pre-paid cell phone just in case SunRocket is down for any reason but we had that anyway for emergency use while traveling. I understand they were working on the 911 issue but I'm not sure if that has been resolved. Overall we have been very happy with their service and the savings. I believe they have a referral program but I'm not sure how that works.

We only have our cell phones now, but that will change soon... In the past, w/ the long distance provider we used, I never paid more than a few bucks a month... It's hard to beat 3.9cents a minute for what we do, but if your work depends on long distance, or you're on the phone to family across the country for several hours a day, every day, it definitely could be worth it..

Yes, It's well past time to switch to VoIP. Find out if the carrier can let you keep your current number. Then ask them for their ping IP# so you can check latencies from your computer - it will be one of the best indicators of decent connections and sound quality. Then ask them for total price of sign-up. Find out if you can go out and buy your own phone adapter, if so, ask which ones are known to work on their system.

finally, the worst package for VoIP is likely to come from your local cable modem providers. My TimeWarner offers VoIP at like $40/month instead of the typical national providers like VoicePulse of $25/month. I chose Nuvio.com at $15/month for 500minutes total/month.

A big drawback to VoIP - you can't receive or send faxes easily (if at all).

hmm... $15/mo for $500 minutes is $.03/min if I'm not mistaken... It doesn't really seem worth it if I can get free long distance on my cell phone and regular long distance for $.039/min & possibly lower now, plus there wouldn't be a minimum payment of $15/mo.
