I do not tithe in the traditional sense, as I am not affiliated with a church, but my dad taught me the tithe eithic. He was born in the church tradition, and kept with him the idea of giving as being required, not optional. My father gives a lot of money to various causes and charities. I do the same: I see giving back as a duty-it's always worked into my budget. My dad is probably around 10%, unfortunately I'm probably at 5%.

I think the idea of tithing is very honorable.

I was never taught to thithe (sp?), but, we were always taught to give to others less fortunate then us and to help anyone that was in need. Mom might have been a spender, but part of her money always went to help others, too- the maids' children, poor people around our neighborhood that might need some food (parents had a small grocery store), and, the kids at the farm got school supplies every year (this was seen as our obligation, as they worked for us and, therefore, family of sorts!)....Nowadays, with money being as tight as it is, I try to contribute a bit here and there to some local charities and, also contribute time whenever I can. At work, we are sponsoring a public school and through various efforts, have managed to raise enough money to change the roof and, are now working on getting enough money to change/fix the plumbing...next comes the wiring and building a small school library/ computer center...

I donate time & money to Church. I've heard that you should tithe time as well as money, although I'm not sure if you're supposed to tithe 10% of each, or a combination that should (theoretically) equal 10%. Any thoughts on this?

Also, I have been self employed for the last few years, and have struggled with tithing since my income fluctuates so much. What do others who are self employed or who have fluctuating income do?

Nope, but now that the CC is paid off I do give some. I would like to give more, I will work on it. I dunno that Jesus was all that particular about numbers, I think giving what you can, because you want to help is more important.

We tithe at least 10 %. That was the amount specified to the people in the Old T. Since Jesus came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it we feel that is the amount pleasing to God. I do believe he can use and will honor whatever we give him. We give a % over in thankfulness for the years we have been married. I have also heard it said we should tithe our time. I believe we need to take care of those the Lord puts in our path or on our heart. I think he wants us to give him the time he asks for, not hold to a specific 2.5 hours a day.

We tithe at church and numerous other charities and all together it's pretty close to 10% but I think our time and talents are also what God has called us to give of. I am very active in our church and my son and I work with a local animal shelter. Have a great day!

Yes, I am a tither. I regularly give 10% of my salary and also make a point to give 10% of my tithe as an offering.

My chuch recommends 10% after tax as a tithe. I tried for a while but bills preclude me from doing so now. I do give as much as I can now. O may tithe again as soon as my financial house is in order.

Is meant to be pre deduction income. I believe the Bible calls it first fruits.

Yes, we use the 10% model. I know it's not a New Testament mandate, but it's a good number to shoot for (and go beyond!). We take the 10% (gross income) off the top and give more as we are able.

Many times if I can get health and beauty items cheap or free, we'll buy and give those to the homeless shelters, as well as clothes, toys, etc.

I never tithed until I married a born again christian . I think it really does bring blessings to your family. Although, sometimes I think about all that cash (%10 before taxes ) i'm giving every month and how much faster i can pay down our debt, but I just stop and give thanks for all that i already have.
