Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think

But it really does matter. The data is clear, whether it’s from Barron’s, or Forbes, or Fortune, that the stock market performs much better, the economy performs much better (for average families), unemployment and wages perform much better, and American society is overall much better, with a Democrat in the White House.
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
So I have absolutely nothing to back this up, this is just my mind thinking in unusual ways. Is there a possibility that the economy runs better when mulitple parties are in power? The late 90's had a democratic president with a republican congress with the economy booming. Is it possible the parties offset each other and go somewhere down the middle?
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
You've hit the nail on the head, CRF. Even though gridlock gets a bad rap, it does a lot of useful things. It helps prevent ridiculous, partisan bills from becoming law. It helps weed out radical judicial nominees. And it also makes the legislative and executive branches keep a close watch on each other, rather than the rubber-stamping that's going on right now.
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
No, they were elected in November of ’94, but were not seated until January of ’95. However, if you remember, President Clinton vowed not to sign any of their failed RightWing public policy into law and said that if the American people wanted such, they were going to have to get themselves another President. The gridlock continued until the Congressional Republicans shut down the federal government twice in January and February of 1996. Only then did the first major budget legislation out of the Republican Majority get signed into law, as they utilized the Clinton administrations budget framework.
The federal budget was in net surplus in the Summer of 1994, so the economic turnaround was well under way long before 1996.
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
VJW, you just proved CRF's original point. Much of the "Contract with America" was a bad idea, and after some tense years of gridlock, the end result was a balanced budget -- which I would argue is very good public policy.
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
Nope.
You still suffer from not reading other’s posts, eh ?
The federal budget was in net balance in the Summer of 1994, six months before the Republican Congressional Majority took office, and a year and a half before they passed any major budget legislation.
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
The federal budget was in deficit until 1998. Please, look into it.
VJW, you wear me out, man. I'm done arguing with you and I'm sure others are sick of us arguing too. So go ahead and hit me with your best zinger, here's your chance.
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
Actually, they shut down the gov't in November 1995. I know because it affected my honeymoon (I wasn't sure if I was going to get my last paycheck from the USDA forest service and the national parks we planned to visit were closed).
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
You’re absolutely correct.
I should have written that the Republican controlled Congress shut down the federal government for the SECOND time in January and February of 1996, not "twice in January and February of 1996".
The timeline of when the first major budget legislation from the Republican Majority was signed into law remains the same.
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
Sweepsplayer,
Your ignorance has escalated from astonishing to just plain PATHETIC.
Try looking up the word "net" in a dictionary.
The federal budget was in NET SURPLUS in the Summer of 1994, a direct result of legislation from a Democrat Majority Congress and other actions from a Democrat White House, SIX MONTHS before the Republican Congressional Majority took office, and a YEAR AND A HALF before they passed any major budget legislation.
Re: Why The Economy Is A Lot Stronger Than You Think
I do remember the government was shut down in 1990 as well. I know this as I was visiting Washington DC and the day we were supposed to go the Smithsonian (main reason for going) and the White House, the government shut down and I was not able to go.
