Re: Women - How much do you spend on hair???

    Rolf! mullet, hehehe

I just wanted to mention DH's hair care, he and the kids have curly hair, NEVER style dry!!! so he HAS to wet it if we are seeing anyone before we go, he used to wash at night and soak in the AM, but now to save water he does it all at once.

He also uses hair gel LOTS (below the shoulders curly THICK hair), we get a big salon sized bottle from a salon owner in PA (where we are from) WAY cheaper than retail products. Course MIL has to bring it to us

He used to try to tame it with expensive stuff, but as he hates hair cuts we discovered long hair helps 'relax' and tame it, for free!

And the hair at the temples again more tame and proper as it grows. I love long hair!

Re: Women - How much do you spend on hair???

I colour my hair at home, every 3-4 months at $10 a pop, and spend another $8 every month on mousse. I use Pert Plus every day. My hair is long and curly and I always cut it myself. I trim the ends and then cut in layers. I've been doing my own hair for about 15 years and the few times that I've gone to a hairdresser, I hated the cut. Curly hair shrinks up so much that it's always too short. I usually cut my layers over a few days, a little bit at a time until I have it the way I like it!

I haven't paid for a haricut in about 3 years and i have always done my own coloring.

My SO or mother cuts my hair.

I haven't had a haircut in about 5 years. It's getting long and splitting, so I'll probably get dh to trim it. The only thing I spend money on is shampoo and hair elastics. If a special event is coming up, I might spend $8 at the salon getting my eyebrows waxed, but that's not often.

net cost of hair care, <$5/month (guesstimate)

Re: Women - How much do you spend on hair???

I have a relaxer perm. I used to spend $55.00 every 6-8 weeks for my retouches. Now, DH and I do my retouches. I showed DH what to do, so he does the back of my head while I do the front. I buy a Dark and Lovely home relaxer kit for $6 to $7 dollars, depending on where I purchase it. The relaxer kit contains two applications, so I spend $7 every 4 months for relaxer. However, I'm always trying new products on my hair, so I probably spend more on hair products than I should in a year...but no more than $125/year. I haven't been to a beauty shop in about a 1.5 years. I wish I had the nerve to wear my hair in a short natural afro or textured style (then, I wouldn't have to do anything to it but wash and oil it...goodbye relaxers and curling irons!), but that means I would have to cut all but about an inch of my hair off (down to the new growth), since it's chemically staightened. Don't wanna do that!

I do my own eyebrows. Don't use wax, though; I shave them with a eyebrow razor.

I don't color, either. My hair is fragile, and the last time I colored it, I experienced some breakage. Fortunately, I have only 1 conspicuous gray hair!

Unfortunately, I don't know how to cut hair, so DH spends $12 every 2 weeks for his haircut. One of the few things he doesn't mind spending money on!

Tomkat, could you get braids put in until your hair grows out? And then when it grows out, take out the braids and get the cut you want?

My one luxury is getting my hair cut and colored. $45. While I was working full time, business ruled, and I had cut and highlights, $100, every six weeks. I'm still trying to figure out which inexpensive shampoo I like. Love those sample freebies!

That is an option, but I don't care for braids because they can cause breakage around your forehead and edges, especially if they're too tight.
Besides, even though my hair is a pain at times, I still like it. It's growing, and it's healthier now than it's been in ages. Going to a natural, while a good idea, would be too big a change for me! If I'm having a bad hair day, I just pull my hair back and put in a ponytail hairpiece (although my hair is now long enough to wear my own ponytail, but I like the hairpiece better).

My hair is short, brown with grey highlights. I am considering coloring it as my "big" birthday approaches but am probably too cheap. There have been times when I spent more on my hair but didn't like it any better. Now I have a trim every couple months and am happy with it. So it comes to around 5 dollars for everything. Of course, my DH shares the hair products so mine is slightly less.

I have dry course curly/wavy hair....I color my own hair at home (vain and grey), I get it cut about every 3-4 mths.

I probably spend WAY to much on crap for it, but I need lots of moisturizing stuff not to mention frizz taming stuff...I try to buy the stuff on sale. I refuse to pay salon prices for what I can get at the local wal-mart only not in such a pretty bottle with the fancy name attached to it. monthly I would guesstimate about 20 a month on hair product....shampoo mouse and all that. I prefer Infusium stuff but also use aussie, frizz Ease

If anyone with similar hair uses something just as effective but cheaper, let me know.....
