    I had a contract about 7 years ago with verizon. Got the "free" phone, etc. Once the contract expired I became month-to-month. I always get offers for a "free phone upgrade" if I sign a contract.

    What I do is that when the phone gets a bit old, I shop ebay or craigslist, check the SIM # to make sure it's open, and switch the phone over. No contract, cancel anytime, monthly bill is still $60/month for 2 phones.

      Yes, CL and ebay are your friends.

      I was attracted to the shiny new iphone. I admit it. I jumped on it and now have a contract again. I regret it.

      I do love my iphone though.
