  • Bought a car today

For the first time in nearly 14 years, I bought a car. As I mentioned in another thread, the local Toyota dealer was doing a special invitation-only sales event today which coincided perfectly with learning that my car need some major repairs that simply weren't worth doing in my mind (well over $2,000, probably closer to $3,000).

We started our day at the Toyota dealer. I confirmed that I don't like the new Camry design. I also learned that the new design began in 2007. I didn't realize it went quite that far back. I checked out the Corolla and it is just too small, very little leg room in the back seat for my 5'8" daughter.

Then, the salesman pointed out a vehicle that is rare to even find on a new car dealer's lot and even rarer as a factory certified model: a 2006 Camry XLE. Yes, it is 6 years old but this particular one had only 26,400 miles. The body was in great shape with only minor surface scratches that the detail department should be able to get out. Carfax report was clean. I reviewed the full service records. It was a trade-in from the original owner a week or two ago. It drives great, very smooth, good acceleration and quiet. Being an XLE, it is fully loaded - power everything, 6-disc CD changer, JBL stereo, wood trim, moon roof, etc. The price was comparable to everything I found online.

I still didn't want to jump in so we left and headed over to the Hyundai dealer as the only other car I knew I was considering was the Sonata but I had never actually seen one or driven one. We took a test drive of a 2-year-old model and actually neither of us liked it all that much. That pretty much sealed the deal.

We headed back to the Toyota dealer and hammered out the numbers and signed on the bottom line. I'll be picking it up on Monday after work.

So it is 8 years newer than mine and has 125,000 fewer miles. I figure even though it is 6 years old, it should still last me a good long time.

Congrats! Can I ask what you paid? And why not the sonota? They seem nice though I haven't driven one. I did however test drive a hyundai elantra touring and I liked that for a station wagon.

Congrats Steve. I just recently put my 96 Corolla down and was thinking of another Corolla or Camry but ended up going the Sonata route instead and love it. Great design, roomy interior, decent gas mileage, good power for a 4 cyl, etc... I'm kinda suprised you didn't like it. But then if the model you drove was a 2010, that was the last year before they did the newer remodeling so I don't know how the interior or drive compares to the newer ones.

Regardless, sounds like you got yourself a really nice car and here's to another 14 years

May we ask what the final price was?

Congrats! I know plenty of people who own Toyota cars (some with over 200,000 miles) who have not had to incur any major repairs. I hope your car serves you well.

Congrats! I always think it's exciting to get a new car. I wish I could buy one, but I'm glad I don't have to. Personally, I freak out at the debt.

The Sonata is a beautiful car and very nicely appointed inside. We just found we didn't like the sporty low-riding design. My wife is only 5'1" and was uncomfortable driving it. She felt like she was sitting on the ground, even if she put the seat as high as it goes. And only the driver's seat adjusts up and down so in the passenger seat, she could barely see over the dashboard. I was okay driving but climbing in and out wasn't all that comfortable and looking ahead to having this car for 10+ years, if I notice it now, I could see it being more of a problem when I'm 10 years older.

I paid 16K. I had searched online while on the lot and found a few similar cars scattered around the country and all were in that same price range.

I've read people's reviews before I bought the car saying it was low, especially the passenger seat. I haven't really had any issues with it and I'm only 5'9" but then I haven't spent much time as a passenger either. If it didn't work for you that's understandable.

I'm sure you'll get many years of use out of your "new" car and I hope you enjoy it. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal on it too since it definitely doesn't sound like the stripped-down model.

What did they give you on trade for your old Camary?

They gave me $1,000. I was fine with that. I don't have the time or desire to try and sell it myself and considering I know it has several current and potential issues, I would be uncomfortable selling it anyway.

I'm surprised they gave you that much considering its age and mileage. I'm guessing it's cause it's a Toyota. A friend of mine only got $500 for his old Buick.

When I first went in, I didn't have the car with me and they offered $700. After I brought it back and they saw it, they upped the offer to $1,000 so I'm not complaining.

That is a great deal. I would have picked that car too! Enjoy.

I was a little hesitant as I've never bought a car that old but the low mileage and great condition swayed me. I'm picking it up tonight.

If anybody would like to see it, they haven't taken down the online listing yet.

Yep. They had the cars tagged as no-haggle prices. Trust me. I tried. They wouldn't budge a dollar. I still think it was a fair deal plus a good price for the trade. And it commands a premium for being factory certified for what that's worth.

Actually, I wish the whole industry would go to fixed pricing. It would make the car-buying experience much easier.
