Suggestions on new furnace/a/c

We are thinking about replacing our old furnace and a/c. Ours isn't ancient, but 14 years old, but knowing what we know of the former home owners, when they replaced it before they put the house on the market, we figure they didn't buy top of the line. Ours it not very energy efficient. We have gotten it checked yearly and I change the filters each month, but we figure it is about to either go bad or require major expenses. Any suggestions on what to get and what to look for?

Why do you think your furnace needs replacement? What remarks did the home inspector note about the furnace when you bought your home? Why do you think you need 'top of the line' furnace? Have you had the heat exchanger checked? Has it cracked? Do you have your furnace cleaned every year or every other year? In some areas the gas provider has a free furnace check and clean program.

Have you done all the other DIY small insulation fixes that improves your home's energy efficiencies? You might find it helpful to look at e-pinions, furnace. Meanwhile start looking on-line at the different brands and models suitable for the size of your home. I would guess it's cheaper/on sale for furnace in summer since it's off season. The basic question to ask salesmen and your gas provider...'how many years will it take for the new furnace' efficiencies' to pay for the new furnace, it's installation, carting off the old furnace and any other fees/tax/charges they add on to the cost.

I suggest you do careful research as to the different types of furnaces and brands rated by Consumer's. Talk to neighbors, friends, colleagues about their experiences and seek recommendations in your community. If you live in my city where it is regularly minus 30C in winter you need a different furnace than if you live in a more moderate climate.
