  • Should I Recommend Credit Freeze To Friend

I have a friend who has had a bit of a touchy issue going on for the past couple of years. He is in his early 20's, and currently lives at home with his parents, to the best of my knowledge rent free. The issue is his mother has opened up a couple of credit cards in his name with out his knowledge. He first mentioned this to me about a year ago. Last week he mentioned it to me again. It seems to be an on going problem.

From what I gather from him, she thinks it is "OK" and no big deal. The truth is doing such makes her an identify thief, there are no two ways around it. Last year he had to change banks because she had stolen his debit card and spent some $500. She seems like a really "nice" person, but I told him that sort of behavior is simply not acceptable at all.

Over December I was the victim of identity theft. I have had a decent eduction on it over the past few months on fraud alerts, but I do not understand credit freezes. I had shared details of my experience with him over the past month, I am guessing that is part of why he has told me about this.

Right now he is planning on pulling his credit reports. He is going to make sure all the accounts are paid off and closed down.

He is not going to file a police report, because it is his mother. I do not know how aggressive he needs to be especially since he is living at home rent free, but it has to stop.

Would a credit freeze work for him?

If he is not willing to report the crime, he is going to continue to be a victim. Yes, he absolutely should contact each credit bureau and put a freeze on his account but that won't fix the problem. Not all creditors check credit before opening accounts. His mother is a criminal who is ruining his financial life. He needs to wake up and realize that and have her treated accordingly.

    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

I agree with Steve. She is a criminal despite it being her son that she is stealing from. He needs to file charges and have this stop once and for all.

That is the absolute truth of the matter.
