    Re: Money Obsession

I often notice how licky I am when I complain about something that wouldn't be an issue here a hundred years ago, or isn't in poor countrys now.

Like dressers, I can't fit them the way I want, but at least I have clothes to fill them and a dresser period.

Or my dirty fridge, at least I am not going hungry just cause the bowl spilled, I am just cleanign it up and making more.

Stuff like that keeps me from whining about how broke we are (or I guess reminding me we really arn't)

You are right about america being obsessed with tv. I spend about 10 minutes each monday doing my budget envelope thing. Then, the last day of the month, I check on my mutual funds and stocks. I keep the totals in a notebook and when I have to do a financial report, I have the figures at my fingertips. That is why I know exactly to the dollar, how much money i had in mutual funds on Dec.31st.

        Re: Money Obsession

I would say I am more obsessed with asset building than with money itself mainly because I am preparing myself for a major disaster and personally see money potentially being devalued quickly at some point in my lifetime. I really don't like seeing what is going on now especially the larger and larger disparity between the haves and have nots. Although I have a decent nest egg built up at my juncture of life I am not satisfied.

I feel for the working class at work as I work longer and harder for less every year yet pay much more for overall taxes and basic costs of living. In addition, I am very concerned about the speed of the decoupling of our democratic ways to ones closer to fascism. Being poor in a fascist environment I don't think makes a great combination. It makes you expendable to the state and/or corporation.

          Boy, this question hits home.

I seriously feel that I obsess over money. But if you don't watch your money its pretty easy to lose track of spending and slip into debt.

I take a certain amount of pleasure watching my savings grow. I do feel a little twinge of jealousy over other people's savings on this board, which tends toward obsession, but if I can use that as inspiration that's more constructive.

I also think that I hide my obsession pretty well - I'm not the total cheapskate who raises a stink at a restaurant or steals food - and I'm not a braggart about my savings. ('cause there's always someone who has more than you. ... )

If you have a financial goal that you're working for, you enjoy your life and you don't hurt other people, even if you obsess over money its all good.

baselle, you make some great points. I'm doing fairly well compared to most people my age, but then I come on here, hear from some of the millionaires, and then start obsessing about it. I think it's important to not get caught up in that. Stay the course, keep saving, we'll get there.

JBinKC, just out of curiosity -- what assets are you accumulating to prepare you for disaster?

                Re: Money Obsession

Most of my money is in a Roth IRA with a large percentage of my money invested in individually researched foreign based resource companies at this time with almost no exposure to USA equities. I would like to own physical metals but unfortunately, you can't buy the metals unless you set up an IRA with a special custodian that charges exhorbitant fees.

Personally, I think the value of the dollar will be very vulnerable to decline once the Fed eases rates again.

Outside the IRA I own a home and some raw land at a separate location.

Oh ok. I thought you were going to say you're stockpiling guns, ammo, canned goods, etc.

                    Re: Money Obsession

I enjoy coming on here and reading about everyone's money experiences. I don't think I am obsessed. I talk everyday on a local forum and no one talks about money. When I put in a topic like money, everyone ignores it.

Then he'd be on a survivalist board and not here.

It certainly isn't the sort of stockpiling I'm used to.

Out of curiousity, which ones? Gold and Silver? Why?

Europeans are gold hoarders, but that's no surprise given what they suffered in the world wars.
