Anyone else see that new show Extreme Cheapskate on TLC? At one point, a man who had taken his wife out to a cheap restaurant for their 25 wedding anniversary went over to a table next to them where the people hadn't finished the food and scooped all the remaing food onto his plate. It reminded me of this thread and I wonder if that was the same person...

Ah, good ole' toocheap? Wonder whatever happened to him? I haven't seen that show, but it sounds eerily familiar.

Good stuff. I gotta say these sentences made my day jpg...

"Yes you are too cheap. You are the embodiment of being cheap, as opposed to frugal.

In fact, I'll be using your posts as examples of what not to do in future posts going forward."

A few links to video clips that give a feel of what Extreme Cheapskate is about:

Extreme Cheapskates: Dumpster Diving for Anniversary Gift : Video : TLC

Extreme Cheapskates: Roy's Cheapskate Home Tricks : Video : TLC

Extreme Cheapskates: Reusable Toilet Paper : Video : TLC

Roy was the one that took food from other people's plates at the restaurant.

I have no problem with dumpster diving. I've rescued many great things from the trash over the years, some which I kept for myself, others which I turned around and resold.

I think washing paper towels to reuse them probably costs as much as it saves.

As for the toilet paper, I've heard that advice before to separate 2-ply sheets but it never made sense to me. If you separate the sheets, you then need to use twice as much to do the job so you haven't saved anything.

Reusable toilet paper? I think not.

Here's a novel idea. How about just making a conscious decision to use only the amount needed? We could all improve on that.

Edit: If cloth is used, you also need to consider the cost of the electricity to run the washer, the laundry detergent, and wear-and-tear of the washer itself. (A genuine tightwad does own a clothes dryer.) If all those expenses are taken into account, there is no doubt in my mind that simply using only the necessary amount of paper will be more frugal. Oh, add in the cost of someone accidentally flushing the cloth, which then clogs the system -- doubly worse if you have a septic tank -- and also the cost of the plumber, and toilet paper seems like a much less expensive option.

Edit on my edit. A sentence above should read:

A genuine tightwad does not own a clothes dryer.

The guy who had a " no spend" week who then scrounged change and bought goats heads, knowing wifey would have no part of them. That is wrong. To me, no spend is NO spend and if he is, why not buy something his wife would eat too?

Knowing plenty of people who have "starred" in reality shows, produce reality shows, write and direct reality shows, I now realize that most of what we see is made up, conjured and fabricated for pure entertainment value. Hence any time I see ridiculous things on TV I watch them with a grain of salt.
