I'm surprised we haven't run the furnace yet, our weather is unseasonably warm. Most years we've already had our 1st snowfall! I've readied the down quilts, fluffed and in their duvet covers but not yet used. It's still dark and cool in the early AM, so pulling on a cuddly robe while I run down to put on coffee and bring in the paper. Might pull on a sweater or fleece for an hour.

Not yet. We've only had a couple nights where it got really chilly. The Kerosene heater has been more than enough to take the chill off so far.

We haven't ran it here yet. In the morning it reads 65 degrees, so I will see how long we can hold off, hoping until November 1. Haha. We are getting it serviced next week though as it will eventually be on!

I don't play the thermostat game. When i am cold, i turn on the heat. When i am hot, i turn on the AC. I set it and forget it. If i can't afford to keep my house at a comfortable temp, then i might as well live in my car. And, the furnace system is designed to cycle and maintain a constant temp with heat or central air. In my opinion , that is much more efficient.

Here in Scotland where its cold and dark we have been using the wood burning stove and the portable gas heater for the last month. But were a hardy and mean bunch so we'll wait for the snow before the radiators go on.

Why is it some kind of contest to show how tough you are or something? It just doesn't matter to me. I bought a home to be comfortable in it. Not to walk around in a winter coat freezing or sweating all summer.

not a contest. this is a savings forum.

Silly to crank the heat so you can wear shorts and a t-shirt in winter when pants and a sweater or heaven forbid a blanket will keep you comfortable.

we as a society are pretty spoiled actually. I have a guy who works for me in his 80s and will tell me stories of when his house had a coal stove in the kitchen....that was it for heat.

To "heat" his upstairs bedroom he would put rocks on the stove to heat them and then put the rocks at the end of his bed.

                  Times have changed.

It's more like noting a change in the seasons. I like the $33.00/month gas bills in the summer. But, I.absolutely hate the smell of the furnace the first few cycles burning off the dust that gets in the system. Bleh! And, the crazy weather--warming up during the day and getting cold at night. I don't like to have AC during the day and heat during the night--so, I try to keep both off for as long as possible.

No where did i say i turn up the heat and wear t shirts and shorts in the winter. But, regardless, it is my house. I heat it for my personal comfort, not someone else's notion of what it should be. I am comfortable in the clothing i wear in my home. I am not interested in walking around wearing a blanket but i wear comfortable, reasonable clothes for the season. So, i turn it to what i like and pay the bill.

I haven't turned mine on yet. It was 41 this morning and last week we had frost on the ground. I keep my heat set at about 63-64 in the daytime and wear a sweater.

No. It was hottest week of the year last week, and then we went on vacation. House was 70F degrees when we got home. WE usually do fine until about 60F degrees. Don't get me wrong - we probably keep it 68=70 in winter during daytime because air gets chillier, but the weather has been so *off,* so who knows. Usually make it to Thanksgiving. In the fall, 60F is fine.

This week was apparently "winter weather" but we weren't home and the house was pretty hot when we left. So it took all week to get down to 70. As long as we have sun, the house heats itself pretty well.

Same here. The rain cost me 30 dollars a month to run my dehumidifier in the basement.
