DW and I just watched "The Joneses." It is available as an instant view on Netflix. It is from 2009 and stars David Duchovny and Demi Moore. I don't want to give too much away but it is an interesting take on consumerism, marketing and keeping up with, yes, the Joneses. If you have access, I think it is worth watching. If you've seen it, what did you think?

I hated the marketing aspect of the show, but it was very interesting. It is a good one time watch movie. My other blog is Your Organized Friend.

I'm certain my remark must be a dumb one..... but I can't imagine what a "high end" toilet would be. IMO, one porcelain **ahem**-catcher is just about the same as most others.Originally posted by red92s View Post. . . one scene features a very high end toilet sold by my employer, so I am all for more people seeing this movie!

You've never experienced a Toto toilet. Heated seat which automatically raises and lowers, bidet function, air dry feature - it is not your run of the mill American Standard.Originally posted by kork13 View PostI'm certain my remark must be a dumb one..... but I can't imagine what a "high end" toilet would be. I plan to check it out, but was kind of hoping it would be a documentary. I have always been fascinated by people who spend money to impress someone else that is spending money.
I took a class in college where a segment was devoted to how Madison Avenue attempts to separate you from your money by what is projected by the product through advertising. That helped me to develop smart shopper radar and to be a value shopper.
We live in a pretty nice neighborhood and the Joneses live across the street from us. The DH had a thriving commercial door business before the real estate market imploded, and at that time they lived like there was no tomorrow. When we first met them in '05, he immediately let us know how successful he was and the lifestyle that they lived. I immediately knew that we would not be spending any social time with them.

Thanks for telling us it is worth watching. I had passed by it several times on Netflix, thinking it looked okay, but not sure if it was worth the time investment to watch it! Now I might go back and watch it, since I too have a hard time finding anything to watch instantly on Netflix that is decent.

Obviously your opinion may vary but if you watch it as social commentary, I think it is interesting. Plus it has Demi Moore in it so that's always a plusOriginally posted by Frugal View PostThanks for telling us it is worth watching. (or David Duchovny for the ladies). It is not a top notch film but I think it has an interesting and unique story line.

Steve nailed it. When you get up into the 4-figure price range things get pretty elaborate. A lot of people just chuckle at the thought of it, but once someone tries it out they are usually hooked. We sell quite a bit to people returning from trips to Japan (where the technology is commonplace) who have gotten hooked. The "big new thing" in extremely expensive toilets is the Kohler Numi.Originally posted by disneysteve View PostYou've never experienced a Toto toilet. Even in the lower price ranges there is huge difference between the Big Box store $69 toilet and a $200 model from a plumbing showroom. My brother had constant clogging issues in his recently-flipped house. Plumber came to check the drain lines, guy took one step into the bathrooms and told him the problem was the toilet not the plumbing. I set him up with 2 toilets, and 6 months later he hasn't touched a plunger.

Funny you should mention that... living here, they really are quite common. But I personally find it terribly unnerving to be sprayed and air-dried. Just a personal preference, I suppose....Originally posted by red92s View PostWe sell quite a bit to people returning from trips to Japan (where the technology is commonplace) who have gotten hooked.
(btw, I really do find these things hilarious. Best story is when I watched a 2 year old unintentionally activate the bidet, and water shot all over the bathroom, after which he started triggering it repeatedly with fascination! LOL!)
