The concept is already very "innovative" and risky in the industry. They can never require or even semi require you to put a device like that in your vehicle.

On a side note. I'm a pretty defensive driver. Had them apply it on my vehicle and got a 10% discount after the trial period. I didn't have to adjust my driving since I drive like a grandma already.

PS: I ran a quote with a different insurance company and will be switching because it's even cheaper so all that stuff just went down the drain

      It's Not Even A GPS

First of all, everyone who says that they are "tracking" you...go back into your house with your aluminum foil hat. This doesn't even have a GPS tracking device in it. They have no idea what the speed limits are for the area you drive in, they have no idea what intersection you're in, and they can't tell where you are and when. It is simply a wireless transmitter like your Motorola car phone from 1991 that monitors speed and braking intensity. So yeah if you drive at a normal speed and stop at a normal rate and you aren't a total cantankerous pillock, it will help you out in the long run. Defensive driving requires you to plan far enough ahead regardless of a situation. If you plan ahead, you haven't anything to worry about last minute.

        I can't believe what I'm reading here...

I won't even touch the "they are tracking me with GPS" conspirarcy theorists...please.

For the first time in my 25 year driving history an insurance company wants to apply a factor to my cost that based on a quantitative value directly related to how I drive? And you all are against this?

I guess you are all happy with them using marital status, age, location, but not actual driving pattern. Funny.

My thoughts completely as I read through this thread.

That's the only reason I liked progressive is because they gave you discounts for every single thing.

Go to work discount, take a walk discount, have a seat discount...

But seriously I 've always wondered how this snapshot discount worked.

Keep in mind I already strive for good gas mileage and smooth driving. 3 trips, 18.5 miles, 0 hard brakes. I drove very carefully and never exceeded 2000rpm, which can be a challenge. I will update after 29 days to let you guys know the initial discount, but I am aiming for the 30%.
Goodness I would never have one of these. This type of driving in my opinion creates hazards on the road and these are the types of drivers in my opinion that are in the fast lane most of the time and cause my blood pressure to go up. Jeez I can't get to the store 1/2 mile away and keep it below 2k. Heck shifting from 2nd to 3rd takes me well above that. I guess we're all doomed to be a bunch of controlled robots with big brother controlling all of our thoughts and actions. Not for me no way no how. I'll gladly spend 30% more to have my freedom and drive like a normal human being. Just keep your damn car in the slow lane. (Yea I'm probably the guy blowing by you whilst you creep along saving your 30% LOL.)

By the way AAA is coming out with something similar to the Progressive big brother as well but the AAA version does have a GPS.

An accelerometer, similar to those found in smart phones and ipods, can be used to estimate speed. The module could have a couple of these to detect speed and also lateral forces (swerving).

                  Progressive auto insurance "Snapshot" discount?

I just finished my 30 days and got 30% initial discount and 30% renewal discount. This is a huge discount if it is applicable. I have to keep plugging the device for 6 months to get the final and renewal discount.I have already paid in full for six months and I don't know how they give me back my 30% initial discount , which is $155.They also changed my insurance declaration page from$720 to $489 which I have already paid for six months for full coverage )
I drive carefully and I usually keep my speed at 40mph ( Hwy max.60mph). I live close to my work place and my round trip is just less than 3 miles per day (for 5days=15 miles)unless I go to shopping or somewhere else.
For my 30 days, I have 7 hard brakes( 3 in one day, 2-in one day twice) and I drove 85 miles total in 30 days . My Weekly average is around 21 miles with one hard brake per week
I usually drive 1pm to 11:30 pm..which is medium risk( 12:am to 4am is high risk)
I will update about my initial discount ,if they give me back and of course my final renewal discount which is after 5 months.
By the way, 30% is the max.discount they can give in this program.

I think the fact that if you are not completely satisfied, you may return the Snapshot device, with no further car insurance purchase obligation is huge. I would say try it out you really don’t have anything to lose.
