Where is the outrage when they are laying off teachers, cutting art, and music and putting 35 kids in a class that used to be 20 kids? But cut the precious sports, which only 2-3% of the kids can even participate in, and there is hell to pay! There still seems to be money to support religious clubs and let congregations meet in public buildings, as well as press lawsuits to keep the dreaded gays out, so maybe there is still money to light the baseball field.
Our local district spent 2004-2008 on a $500 million building spree constucting the most shoddy new schools you've ever seen. They have all kinds of problems that can't be fixed. Never hired professionals to manage these projects - expected principals to be project managers. Supposedly all the building was to accomodate our "booming" population.
Now they are crying poor. We can't raise taxes anymore. So we cut programs, layoff teachers, increase class sizes. No raises for the teachers. They'll still fire any teacher that doesn't say "intelligent design" is a legitimate theory. Well, actually darwinism is a theory and intelligent design is God's truth!
Still lots of money for lawsuits though. And for home schooling. And for Charter schools. God forbid that religious, white republicans would have to pay to send their kids to private school. Better to find a way to bleed it out of the public system!
But I'm not bitter about it or anything. Who cares really? The world is ending on Oct 21.
