If you are taking driving trips there really is no need for it, just make sure to check your car out beforehand to know that it's capable of doing long trips.
Traveling abroad is a different story, as it is wise to take out traveler's insurance so that you are covered in case of a medical emergency, or something serious in nature where you don't have the access you would have in your own country.
