When they come knocking, you should just offer to help them look into senior (public) housing options. They usually charge rent on a sliding scale based on income (which is SS for your parents) and expected utility costs.

when they deplete their savings then mediCAL will kick in, they can provide a convalescent home but it will lack the personal touch

i am going through this with my father right now, he wants free care but his savings must be gone, i prefer him to stay where he is in an assisted living facility. its really nice there but he doesn't want to spend his money.
