  • What are your thermostat settings?

    OK, as of today my heat is offically on til spring.

    HOWEVER, my settings are very low.
    61 at night beginning at 9 p.m. and during the day while i'm at work.

    For about 4 hours, from 5:30 p.m. til 9 p.m., it's up to a balmy 66.

    That's it!

    When friends or family come over, I splurge and spike it up to 68.

    QUESTION: my house has oil heat except 1 room, an addition, that has electric heat. I can close off that room all winter as i don't need to use it. The question is, is it ok to not warm that room at all? It's over an unheated garage. Or should i just keep it on at about 50 degrees? My concern was weather no heat would make the wood furniture in that crack, shrink or expand.

    62 during the day, whether I'm home or not! 67 from 6-11, then 65 overnight. It used to be 70-72 before I started watching my money more closely...

    (I wish I had some of the fire this guy's breathing! )

      60*F during sleeping hours.
      Goes up to 68*F around 5 or 6 a.m. (can't remember)
      Goes down to 66*F around 8 or 9 a.m.

      I can't remember if we have it set to go back up to 68*F in the early evening or not. I don't think we do.

      We have a gravity furnace and only have vents on the east side of our house - one in the living room, one in our room, one in DD's bedroom and one in the bathroom. The other side of the house has an electric wall heater between the dining room and craft/sewing/laundry room. We only turn that on when it's really chilly in there.

          66 all the time.

          Dunno anything about wood cracking, sorry. but I do know doors swell and stuff, due to temperature variations, like a warm house cold weather, might do that with a cold room and warm house, or not...

            Currently set for 64 during the day and 58 at night. However, we've had such great weather I'm not sure it's had a real test yet! (Today it was 70 . . .on November 2 . . .in MINNESOTA!)

              Ours is set for 68 evenings (starting at 6:30pm) and then drops down to 60 overnight.

              In the morning is comes on at 6:30 am, and drops back to 60 for during the day - I can't remember what time it turns back to 60, but I believe around 8.

                Re: What are your thermostat settings?

                I've been wondering what others have their thermostat set to so this is the perfect thread.
                Currently I have it set to kick in at 68 a little before I wake up (6:00am) untill my wife and I leave for the day (8:00am). It then goes down to 60 until we return home (5:00) and back up to 68. At 10 it is back down to 60 untill the am. I am thinking of lowering it to 58 during the day when nobody is home, I don't have much leeway on the other settings unless the winter bills come in to high.
                To paraphrase
                6am-8am -> 68
                8am-5pm -> 60 (thinking of lowereing to 58)
                5pm-10pm -> 68
                10pm-6am -> 60

                  Re: What are your thermostat settings?

                  Have you all purchased something that allows you to time it in advance, or are many of you doing it manually?

                  Currently, no heat in my house - so it's not set at anything. This weekend in VA it's going to be 77. I almost need air conditioning! But it is gorgeous, and I love extending the no heating/cooling time for bills!

                  How much does a thermostat timer cost? (I'm sure it's worth it - I need to buy one.)

                    Re: What are your thermostat settings?

                    When I woke up today (weekend, I get to sleep in) it was 90F in my room. Heat is not an issue, yet. We've had some mornings where it was 58 outside but still 73 inside. The AC has kicked on once today and it's set at 87.

                    I just want to stop being hot.

                      50! (We just want it OFF). It is unseasonably warm in central New Jersey (60's in November!) and somehow our apartment stays warm - maybe from all the sunlight we get through our windows, maybe from other apartments in our building -- but it is TOO hot in here most of the time, requiring us to open the windows!! This will be a much cheaper winter than last year in Rochester NY where my apartment was in an older house with BAD insulation!

                        Re: What are your thermostat settings?

                        Our thermostat is automatic ...it is 65 at night, then starts warming up to 70 a 7:30. We usually get up 7:30-8 am. Sometimes in the dead of winter, our family room feels too drafty so we will put the thermostate up to 72 or even 74 when we are in there, but usually we go south in the winter so this is not an issue.

                          71 - we worry about our 18 month old being too cold at night. Of course, our whole apartment is only 500 sq. ft., so it doesn't cost a lot to heat the sucker (the apartment, not my little boy).

                            Ours are at 65-66 degrees at all times and we burn candles to keep it warmer. You'd be suprised as to how warm a room can get with 1 of those 4 wick candles you can get at walmart for $4.88. 1 candle lasts for weeks. I place mine in a $44 free standing chimnea that I also got at walmart last year, it keeps whatever room I place it in, at about 70 - 72 degrees, even when it is about 30 degrees outside and the thermastat is at only 65-66 degrees. We now have my parents and sister doing the same in their homes and it saves a lot of money with the heating bills.

                              It is actually good for infants to sleep in a slightly cooler room, reduces ther risk of SIDS. I'n not sure where I read this, maybe Dr Spook or some other parent book/mag. I think that the recomendation was 66-68.
