        Gaven,

The first step in saving money is to understand where you spend every dollar of income.

When you list every dollar that you spend for one month, you'll have a pretty good idea of where the money is going each month.

Then you can do the second step, which is to analyze that listing and see where you are "surprised". Those amounts that are pretty high, may be one of the categories of expenses where you either should spend less or want to spend less. Those are the ones to look into for possible cutbacks.

Then the third step is to create a realistic budget. Build in savings and fixes for things that may be irregular expenses (like auto repairs, etc)... and plan.

You cannot create a budget out of the blue... you need to know where your dollars are disappearing; then you can understand what you need to do or change to meet your future goals.

The best way to save money is to MAKE MORE! You can only save so much money - it ends at 0. But we can always make MORE! Focus your efforts on ways to increase the amount of money you make, while being rational with your spending, and you'll be best off!

I'd say you first need discipline and an understanding of where you are spending money in the first place. Once you can identify what your in and outgoings are you can then start to prioritise them. With a bit of discipline you should be able to reduce any unnecessary outgoings and start to put your savings to one side.

It is not how much you make, it is how much you spend. It takes time to be frugal, so you have to find the right balance of work and spending. Everyone is different, but I would advocate getting spending under control before adding more work. I worked so long and so hard for so many years, but did not have my spending under control. I was too busy to think!

Now I am not working and find we are doing just as well because I have time to be frugal. Just my humble opinion.

If only our government would wise up and do just some of the things that we all do here on the blogs. Just use what they have and reduce spending.

To increase savings, you need to look at your expenses to see what can be reduced or dropped. Another way is to start with your savings goal and change your expenses to fit the goal. The next step is to set up a payroll deduction. In this way you learn to live on less.
