  • Crazy HSA story

So I was just talking to a couple of co workers about some medical procedures that men can have to prevent pregnancy. Anyway, my friends wife just had a baby so I mentioned to him that he should get the procedure this year because he has definately gone over the $2000 deductible his family is required to pay for each year and that our insurance will pay for the procedure.

    (Him)Deer in headlights..........

He said he said he thought he could only go up to the amount he paid in each year(HSA) and then had to wait until the following year when he had more money in his account or use his own money.

    (Me)Deer in healdights..........

This guy has 4 kids and a wife and has been doing that for 11 years!

I couldn't tell him he had potentially missed out on thousands and I mean thousands of dollars. He is diabetic and takes insulin so he spends serious money each year.

I'll have to walk across the street later tonight and explain how it works over a beer. Yes, he lives straight across the street from me.

Careful... $2000 might be deductible on one person, but the max might be $4000 or higher for the family.

My HDHP has a $1500 per person deductible and a $3000 family deductible before those discounts kick in. Meaning if one person has high bills, help kicks in at $1500, but if lots of people have moderate bills, we need $3000 to get spent before help kicks in.

And I have heard HDHPs are not friendly to people with chronic problems like diabetes (from a co-worker who's wife is diabetic). Him and his wife both work for same employer as me, but wife gets coverage on another plan because its cheaper for her. His 3 kids and him are on the HDHP as I am and he said that works out quite well.
