  • Do you have an FU fund?

So here is the back ground on this question.

The other night I was talking to a friend whose job was eliminated at his company so he was laid off with severence. He still talks to former co-workers. He was telling me the manager came in and told everyone they had to work Saturday and Sunday since they were behind. This included people who had vacations planned.

So we talked about it more. I have a belief you bust your ass during the week and the weekend is yours. I told him I would not have gone in and he agreed. We both said that cause we have 1. enough money saved up so we arent worried if they want to fire us, 2. they are so behind anyway that it is highly unlikely. As we talked he called it the F U fund. Can you guess what F U stands for?

So do you have an F U fund?

Mine is more of a "funmoney" fund, because there's not enough in there (yet) to be able to say FU to my boss. I fund mine with money from bank offers, half.com, etc., and use it to buy fun stuff, vacations, etc. that we wouldn't be able to fund from the normal budget.

I have an emergency fund of nearly 3 months expenses. I add to it right now at the rate of about 1000 a month, till it reaches that 3 month mark. Then I'll slow it down a bit to start putting some of that money in a Roth IRA, but I'll still be adding nearly $700 a month. When it gets to a year of expenses... I think I'd feel like I'd be able to quit if my boss asked something totally unreasonable of me.

I think I have enough to survive at least a yr without a job (just paying rent and food - no other debt) but i wouldn't want to quit my work without finding another job unless I really had no other choice. Last time (and my first time) I got laid off I thought I had enough money to survive 8 months but 4 months of doing nothing ate up almost all of it. I guess when you're not occupied 8-10 hrs a day you have lots of free time to waste money on things...

          This is a great idea.

Last year, my employer made plans to move our department across town to the basement of a building they owned. It was so far underground, freight trains and passenger trains passed by thirty feet above the ceiling. There were rat traps everywhere, and they had only six weeks to fix it up before we moved in.

So our entire department threatened to quit if they insisted we moved there. I think we all really would have quit. It would have meant increased commute costs/time for all of us, and the conditions would have been terrible.

I could put my foot down because I have another job (altho it's not enough money to think about really quitting this one), my spouse works, and we have an emergency fund worth about five months' expenses. Still, I would have been scrambling to replace the income if I'd had to quit.

How much would I need to really feel like I could say F.U. any time? At least a year's living exp, maybe even two years. A year could go by pretty fast before I found decent work in my field without having to move.

I work for a major nation wide utility company. Its in our contract we have to work overtime if they tell us it is mandatory. We have no choice. if you don't, you can be terminated. We usually just grumble and do it. Where else in our hick town, or even within an hour drive, can we get another job that starts out at $19 and hour and tops off at $29, with benifts?? So, we let them abuse us. To get it fixed, we need to get our union on the ball to get our contract changed--but to do that, then we end up giving up more vacation days or holidays and such...so, its almost like, whats the use??

Ahh but mandatory overtime with pay is one thing, in the professional (accounting, finance, etc.) world we dont get overtime. There in lies the crux. But I am sure if you had vacation planned and approved by the company that would keep you from having to come in. The BS of, i have a vacation planned and you still have to come in? My question is are they paying for the cancelled ticket? No? Well FU then..

I agree with CRF. And just as much as you need to respect your employer, they need to respect you.

If we have vacation planned it does not matter. Lost tickets and lost money are our problem. Our vacation is not rescheduled either. For 3 years in a row, when I was low senior person with only 2 weeks in vacation, I had no vacation. I also have missed all of my childrens first Christmas and birthdays, because I had to work. They really don't care if you have family or not. Thats when it is nice to work for a small mom and pop operation who know your family and are willing to work with you.

Re: Do you have an FU fund?

Well my EF would be my FU fund if it ever came to that, however, I guess I'm fortunate in that I do get every weekend off. On occcasion I do have to work on weekends, it is usually because I feel I need to in order to make my project dates rather than being required to. My employer is also very flexible when I need time off during the week, so I would not complain if they asked for a few weekends. Beside, I have worked so many weekends, holiday's, nights, etc. in past jobs, that it's a blessing to have virtually every weekend off.

Funny, I might need to tap into my FU fund soon

Today, I told one of the managers off. If he complains to the CIO I'm be outta here. However, I'm tired of bending over backwards because some people like to work the IT staff as their personal secretaries. We'll know soon enough.

I'm feeling butterflies but I'm definitely not worried - bring it!

Yep, I have an FU fund... although I call it the kiss my a** fund. It gave me a lot of confidence when I doing a salary negotiation for my promotion.

Good luck, Russell, but its been my experience that the jerks and the tattletales pick on the weak. If you have an FU fund, you're not weak.
