  • First Job

I'm curious as to what everyone's first paid job was...

I started babysitting when I was 11, which led to working in an out of school care when I was 13. At 15, I organized a summer daycamp in the townhouse complex that I lived in. We would take kids on day trips and I would pay my friends to come with me and help out. The number of people that I hired depended on how many kids I would have for the day--varied from 8-18. All this led to a degree in Early Childhood Education, which I don't use at all anymore, except to outsmart my own kids (maybe!).

Petsitting and babysitting really young, like 8. Saved every penny and kept track of my net worth in pencil on my wallpaper behind a poster on the wall, even down to the penny. I'd update the number if I so much as found a penny on the street. I wish I was that frugal now. I guess I've always been a little obsessed with money and how to get it, save it, etc. I remember trying to figure out how long it would take me to double the money in my savings account at 2 percent interest. I have no idea how I went about trying to figure this out, but remember thinking I'd be dead before the money doubled. It was so discouraging.

At 12 I made beaded jewelry and sold it on consignment in local stores.

Didn't have a paycheck until college--worked as a writing tutor for $4.60 an hour. First job with benefits: skate and snowboard rental shop.

My sister and I took turns being cashier at my parent's grocery store on Tuesdays and Fridays (when the new veggies and vegetables arrived and MOm and Dad were going nuts trying to price/arrange everything) since I was 10 years old...I got 5 colones, which was $2...I was rich! the movies cost 1.50 (colones!)...I used to save up my money to buy the toys I wanted (I was crazy about dolls, you can't own too many dolls...I believe this was passed on to my daughter, she's also crazy about dolls!)...my first "real" job was teaching English...lol!
