I think most of these are part of it. My parents were poor and I observed them to some extent. I grew up thinking for instance that it was wrong to waste and to take care of what I have. It was also a necessity as it was many years before we (my dh & I) had much money and we had 4 children to provide for. I also like the challenge!
2. because that's the way I was raised, and it's part of my temperament/nature.

I moved into my own apartment for my last year of college (while attending full time), and money was TIGHT! (Rent, Utilities, Internet, Car expenses) and I didn't ask for any assistance from my parents despite living 25 minutes from them. It was tough at times! But I did it. It also proved to be good practice for when I moved this past July to a new state! With higher living expenses. I'm much better with spending money now than I was at the beginning of college, living on campus, and receiving support from my parents in addition to the money I earned from working.
