  • Spotting The Jones'

I had a neighbor showing off his new $2000 lawn mower the other day. While it looked great as he rode around on it, I thought to myself this is the perfect illustration of the Jones' - the fact is that his yeard is no bigger than mine and there is no reason to have a riding mower for it. I cut the same sized lawn with an old fashion push mower that works fine. So the riding mower is a bit of overkill, but you could see it in the eyes of many of the neighbors that they wanted one too.

I thought it would be kind of fun for others to share incidents where they spotted the Jones' or to keep a look-out for Jones' from now on. I bet there are a lot of incidents that all of us see if we look for them.

The guys living at the end of my street.. they have a snowmobile..
    now I live near boston..

so seriously there isn't a great need for a snowmobile.
but during the winter while we're all plowing out our snow from the driveways. That neighbors kidz, zoom up and down the street on the snowmobile.

Those kids are looking for attention too, like "look at me, on the snowmobile.." I was shoveling, last thing i wanted to do is recognize how fun that snowmobile is LOL..

the guys overall are cool tho.. but they are the jones' they got a St. bernard.. they got the snowmobile, and they got the big house..

they used to have a small house, but it exploded. They had a company do some work on their house years ago, but the company failed to call up digsafe. They dug in the wrong place, and the whole building went up in the air.

Oh geez where do I start? My neighbors ARE the Jones and show it off to ALL! Sadly we have to share a private lane with them and the lane goes right to my house and then turns so every single thing they buy goes by my house, often with the delivery men stopping and asking if the newest toy is mine, now do I REALLY look like I bought that 18'x24' gazebo (as I'm doing farm chores in ratty tennies, holey jeans and a ripped t-shirt?)

They bought the property at the same time we bought our farm (2 1/2 years ago) and in that time have built a 3 bed/4 bath home with spotlights EVERYWHERE (we guestimate around 225,000-250,000 on the house), a 100,000 barn that they succeeded in burning down so they built a new one for 125,000. A 28,000 steiner mower package (yeah they REALLY need that tree planter lol!). The gazebo went in about 6 weeks ago, then 2 weeks ago a brand new ez-go cart (9,500, we priced it at the fair). They also have a golf cart, 2 quad runners, 2 tractors, 3 suburbans/trucks, and and and, lol.

The sad thing? With that huge barn and 4 car garage they leave all the machinery out in the rain, that drives my husband nuts.

This coming Saturday they're having their housewarming blowout, complete with a hog roast and we know this is going to be a huge blow out, they're constantly having people in and out at all hours.

They also just put a smoking lounge and cable in the barn (yes, the BARN, after burning the last one down, UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!)

They also have Fed ex and UPS in and out 2-4 times a week.

BTW, they are NOT wealthy, he's retired from the city street crew and she's not in that high paying a job, we know various family members and we're ALL taking bets on when the bankruptcy/property auction will be, lol.

We're not jealous of them, just in awe that anyone would think they need all that stuff, lol, we also bet on what the next big toy will be, we're betting on a snowmobile buy Dec

Living in an apartment with a hummer.... That one takes the cake for me. They think nobody knows where they live but this is a small town really and that isn't hidden for long. They have all the adornments of the rich and infamous, just looking. But when you find out about them..really. They are trying hard to keep up appearances. Nothing saved for a rainy day, barely making it, but if you reminded them of this fact, you might be fearing for your life.

          Re: Spotting The Jones'

I withhold judgement of the Jones' because we rarely know the whole story. My neighbor's priority for recreation is four wheelers and motorcycles. I prefer to travel. I don't know if the neighbors are in debt above their heads or not. But I have no desire to ride around on an oversized four wheeler with dust in my face, They on the other hand seem to think it is rather exciting. They also have an SUV. I choose to drive something with better gas mileage, that I don't have to take a running start to get into. I have said it before it is about priorities. Maybe they are too far in debt. Maybe it bothers them. Maybe it doesn't. As for me I feel overwhelmed by the debt and feel it is my priority to reduce it rather than add to it. So I choose not to be the Jones. Although I think there are probably people who wish they could have what I have.

Unfortunatly the Jones' I know best are related, so I do have a good idea of their financial status .

But the new 'stuff' all the time doesn't bother me so much (jelousywise) when I see it all stacked and piled and cluttered, and all that crap. Who needs 1000 of something when you can't use any of it cause you can't get to it over the 1000 other things?

Though when I hear the financial complaints, then I get annoyed. Sorry I have very little sympathy for a cut off phone bill when I can point to more than enough stuff to pay off the car in one room!

I too have relatives who are the Jones crew. Backyard in the ground pool with all sorts of fancy extras including tons of tables and chairs around. They also doubled the size of their house. The spending is non-stop. Hey, good for them. I will just save my money and use one of the town pooks. I also don't need a huge house to clean, heat, cool, maintain, and pay higher taxes on!

My town doesn't have a pook yet. Hopefully we'll get one soon. Just kidding.

We have to be very careful that we don't covet what they have though. And if you have that mastered, then you have to be very careful you don't become too prideful because you're so smart with money. It's a tough line to walk.

I agree with byusteeler on the judgement issue, but I can't help wondering.

Anyways, someone has to spend money in the economy.

I am sorry but those trucks are ugly to me! well, dont' have to worry about me spending my money on one! I wonder if people think we are the jones? This summer we bought 2 go carts and a huge swimming thing that you climb and slide down. and a medium pool. one of these blue ring ones. but we spent less than $500 on all of it! Everything we got was second hand from a couple of people who did spend more than they should. I love to have things but cannot stomach the high costs of new.

Our Jones's are family members...eating out, gambling, vacations every few months...I try not to think about it. Just hope I'm not the one who has to help them out of big time trouble one day!

I have relatives who are the jones' & unfortunately that means they get things turned off every other week but whos counting they have 2 new cars & thats all that counts I geuss!! And soon a very expensive home we shall see how long that lasts I feel bad for the kids though ya know.

I wish dh would realize this & quit thinking we need to keep up with them. Dh tries but I do hold him back a little when I can.

I also have relatives I wish I had what they have they are very sucessful in what they do but dont flaunt it not even one bit he drives a car just like mine I know its because he could care less about what others think he never goes all out on anything or buy anything brand new but has plenty to if he wanted but chooses not too thats how he got where he is today I think
