  • Thinking Honda Ridgeline

I've been thinking about buying a new truck for awhile.

I was going down the path of the full-size big he-man-truck. But the more I consider it, the more I realize I don't really need all that. So I've been considering the Honda Ridgeline.

For all you guys out there that have one, how do you like it? Was it what you thought it would be?

What did you have to pay? Full list, discounted, or invoice price?

Do you tow anything? Are you happy with it's power?

Are you getting decent mpg? Has it been reliable?

My needs are pretty straight forward - I have a 3500 lb boat, I do alot of trips to the garden center (have a utility trailer) and Costco.

I own a 2007 Ridgeline (maybe its 2006?). I own the year it was voted #1 safety truck because I would joke about commercials (it did not win award until after I bought it...)

I paid about 38k for a new one
    I love it
gets about 17 mpg city and 19 mpg highway
my commute is about 5 miles, so I barely notice any gas guzzling features.

I used the truck to move soccer equipment from home to field- it worked well for that purpose. I have the tuneau cover and its relatively water tight except for car washes and when it snows- and then it only gets a little wet.

I'm curious about this too. This is the vehicle my husband is interested in buying in a year or so.

I'm not crazy about the prices - hopefully you are paying for quality, though. My Odessey van has been terrific.

It's hard to swallow $38k when you can get a full sized, fully loaded with a V-8 for that. But I've been down that road - my 2005 Expedition was $45k new and sold for $13k when I unloaded it 4 years later.

I wish the Ridgeline had the same engine that my van has. It has the cylinder shutoff - I usually get 27 or 28 on the highway. And it has lots of power.

I don't think you can go wrong with a honda...did you check consumer reports ratings? That is where I automatically go when checking out autos.

            27 on the highway?

            are you sure?
            what year?

I have gotten almost 20 mph on some long highway trips, but rarely even approach 20 mpg. Maybe I drive fast or something...

Yep. It's a 2009 Odessey Touring. It has the cylinder shutoff - runs on 4 cylinders when the load is light ("eco" mode).

I drive like an old man though - generally 70-75 on cruise.

I have a pretty good track record of getting the MPG on the sticker or slightly above. I also don't buy cheap gas. The last tank I bought at the Wawa I only got 18 mpg around town - usually it's 23 or 24 - so it's back to Shell.

I love my 2005 Nissan Titan SE. Got it new for $24K I think it was. Yes, the gas mileage is a little worse than the Ridgeline, but I would not consider trading for a Ridgeline. I can fit full size "stuff" in it (i.e. plywood, huge payloads, etc.). And I can & do comfortably/ easily tow one helluva big boat! I traded in a mid/small-ish Toyota Tacoma because it was just not enough truck; I think the Ridgeline is similar.

Not that I care about appearances, but the Titan is a man truck, not a metrosexual truck! (even the exhaust note is man-approved!) Kinda kidding there, somewhat, but I really mean this in terms of, I like the safe feeling being in one of the larger vehicles in traffic. I'm high up so I can see well, & I like my chances in an accident.

Edit: My Titan is a King Cab, for the record

I have a 2006 Ford F250 Powerstroke Diesel, so when I drove my friend's Ridgeline I was a bit disappointed in the roominess and in the power. Not that I don't think that it's a nice vehicle. It certainly was. It's just not what I'm used to, and it's not suited to pulling 10,000 lbs as I often do when hauling equipment and materials up to our camp that we've been remodeling, or when towing my dad's 27 foot boat to the lake.

Comparing an F250 to a V6 truck has lots of wiggle room for interpretation.

If I had to haul things, I doubt I would have bought a Ridgeline.

                        Update -

                        Went and looked last weekend.

Couldn't pull the trigger. These trucks are really neat, but I think they are too expensive for what they are. Generally the same price as fully loaded full size trucks and no better gas mileage.

                        So I'm mulling.
