  • How long to cc payments to show online?

I just started using a credit card for cash back rewards (It gets paid in full at the end of every month if not sooner).

I have a pretty detailed budget, and by the time Friday rolls around any expenses that came in below budget (groceries, gas, etc.) I end up using as extra spend money on the weekend. This normally amounts to no more than $25, but I still look forward to it.

Anyway, now that I'm using a credit card, I see that my purchases don't show up online until one, two or once even THREE days later. I try to keep a tally in my head, but before when I used my debit card almost everything was automatically deducted and I had a quick idea just by checking my account online. It drives me nuts because whatever I'm seeing online is essentially outdated information.

Are all credit cards like this? Or are there some that post the transactions quicker than others?

FYI I have a capital one no hassle credit card (the one that offers 2% on cash and groceries and 1% on everything else).

Sorry for the weird thread subject name. That's what I get for not checking my writing first before sending!

Our Visa and Discover cards are like this. Posting date often doesn't match transaction date. I have no idea why that is and our spending isn't such that it matters at all.

DS, I agree it doesn't really matter much but it's something that I find really annoying having used debit cards for a long time.

I only have 1 CC that will show pending charges immediately. I think 2-3 days is fairly standard processing time for charges to show.... all of the other credit cards I've used are that way. However, most CC's will at least show the drop in your credit available within 1 day, if not less.

          Guppy,

The card we use the most has a delay in posting the itemized transaction. I wish it were faster. The charges are posted immediately in a lump sum pending amount, but that also includes pre-authorizations so it may not be accurate (particularly after we have taken a recent trip).

We have another card that we use infrequently (only charged two things on it) that shows the itemized pending amount immediately. (I don't know why they all can't be like that!)

Yes, this is typical. It can sometimes take 4 or 5 days for a charge to post to the account.

If travelling it can take several weeks for charges to show up! You can use a check register to track charges. Pitch receipts into an empty tissue box so you can verify charges on the statement are correct before paying the bill.

You can use other people's money if you pay the bill two days before due date. CC have cut off dates, those charges will not be due until the following billing cycle. This is helpful when making large/expensive purchases
